Abstract

Epilepsy and antiepileptic medicine (EAM) has an effect on hormonal and neuroendocrine system and also it there is complex connection between these and reproduction system. Hormonal and neuro endocrine changes may cause a shift in seizure threshold and may result in comorbid diseases like, sexual and reproductive problems, deterioration in thyroid functions and obesity. Sexual dysfunctioning is a critical side effect on quality of life and it is a crucial health indicator for males with epileptic history. Endocrine dysfunctioning related to reproductively are observed more in women with epilepsy compared to healthy population. 30% of women with epilepsy have reproduction related functional deterioration. Both epileptic discharges and EAM usage result in deterioration in central and peripheral control of hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis and as a result start of a treatment and follow up process gains importance for epileptic patients.
