Soloxolone methyl, as a 18βH-glycyrrhetinic acid derivate, may result in endoplasmic reticulum stress to induce apoptosis in breast cancer cells
(Elsevier, 2021-01-15) Alper, Pınar; Salomatina, Oksana, V; Salakhutdinov, Nariman F.; Ulukaya, Engin; Arı, Ferda; Alper, Pınar; ARI, FERDA; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi/Biyoloji Bölümü; 0000-0001-9631-3551; 0000-0002-6729-7908; DUL-1586-2022; AAG-7012-2021
Being one of the leading causes of cancer death among women, various chemotherapeutic agents isolated from natural compounds are used in breast cancer treatment and consequently studies to develop new drugs still continue. There are several studies on 18 beta H-glycyrrhetinic acid, a secondary metabolite which is found in Glycyrrhiza glabra (liquorice roots), as a potential anticancer agent. In this study, the cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of Soloxolone methyl compound, a semisynthetic derivative of 18 beta H-glycyrrhetinic acid were investigated on breast cancer cells (MCF-7, MDA-MBA-231). Soloxolone methyl is found to be cytotoxic on both MCF-7 and MDA-MBA-231 breast cancer cells by inducing apoptosis. Especially in MDA-MB-231 cells apoptosis is detected to be triggered by ER stress. The antigrowth effects of Soloxolone methyl were determined using MTT and ATP assays. To identify the mode of cell death (apoptosis/necrosis), fluorescent staining (Hoechst 33342 and Propidium iodide) and caspase-cleaved cytokeratin 18 (M30-antigen) analyses were used. In addition, apoptosis was investigated on gene and protein levels by PCR and Western Blotting. Soloxolone methyl decreased cell viability on cells in a dose and time-dependent manner and induced apoptosis markers. An increase on apoptotic proteins related to endoplasmic reticulum stress (IRE1-alpha, Bip, CHOP) was also determined in MDA-MB-231 cells. Moreover, an increase of apoptotic gene expressions was determined in both cells treated with Soloxolone methyl. Advance analyses should be performed to elucidate the potential of Soloxolone methyl as an anticancer agent in breast cancer treatment.

(Gazi Üniversitesi, Mühendislik Mimarlık Fakültesi, 2021-01-01) Çavdur, Fatih; Sebatli-Sağlam, Aslı; Köse-Küçük, Merve; ÇAVDUR, FATİH; Sebatli-Sağlam, Aslı; KÖSE KÜÇÜK, MERVE; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Endüstri Mühendisliği Bölümü; 0000-0002-9445-6740; 0000-0001-6877-2937; AAC-2099-2020; JYP-7925-2024; AAE-4504-2019
Disaster operations management is carried out in a chaotic environment under uncertainty and time pressure. Therefore, it is necessary to use information and communication technologies in the decision making processes. In this study, a standalone decision support system is developed for temporary-disaster-response facilities allocation for relief supplies distribution as one of the important problems in disaster operations management. The decision support system consists of three main components as its database, decision engine and user interface. It is noted that the decision support system allows decision makers to allocate temporary-disaster-response facilities under many different disaster situations by utilizing a scenario-based approach. Thus, disaster operations managers are given the opportunity to create different scenarios and analyze the results that will help them make critical decisions before and during the disaster. In the scenario definition process, in addition to taking into account different values of affected population rate and planning period, some model configurations consisting of the combinations of various problem parameters are also defined. Although it is illustrated with a specific example case in this paper, the flexibility of the system allows its users to consider other cases with different scenarios. Due to the user-friendly interface of the decision support system, reports of the results obtained for various disaster scenarios are presented to the user in an understandable way. The proposed system might be a useful tool to help decision makers in allocating temporary-disaster-response facilities for relief supplies distribution.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to show at what rate the technological equipment used in cataract surgery by Turkish ophthalmologists and their knowledge are reflected in practice and how up to date they are.Materials and Methods: A questionnaire conducted using SurveyMonkey was used to evaluate the answers to 17 questions from 823 members of the Turkish Ophthalmological Association. Results were evaluated in subgroups according to the participants' age, occupational status, institutions, and whether they conducted relevant academic activities, and the data were compared as inadequate, standard, and contemporary approaches according to the determined criteria. Results: Optical biometry devices were used at rates of 77.7% and 67.3% for intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations and keratometric measurements in preparation for cataract surgery, respectively. For IOL power calculation, third-generation formulas, especially the SRK-T, were used most commonly (46.2%), followed by second-generation formulas (21.9%), and fourth/fifth-generation formulas and multiple evaluations for different axial lengths (31.9%). The most common incision size was 2.8 mm (51.6%), while the percentage of 2.2 mm and shorter incisions considered to be neutral in terms of surgically induced astigmatism was 18.8%. When selecting incision location, approaches to reduce corneal astigmatism were reported by 28.9%, neutral approaches by 26.2%, and insensitive approaches by 44.9%. Additionally, 55.6% of participants never implanted toric IOLs and 50.7% did not use presbyopia-correcting IOLs. The proportion of surgeons who have experience with femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery was 10.3% and the rate of intracameral antibiotic injection at the end of the operation was 89.4%.Conclusion: It was seen that Turkish cataract surgeons were able to use high technology for surgical preparation and surgery at high rates, but this was not reflected in practice at same rate in terms of achieving contemporary standards of refractive cataract surgery.

(Univ Zagreb Vet Faculty, 2021-01-01) Dincel, Deniz; DİNÇEL, DENİZ; Ardicli, Sena; ARDIÇLI, SENA; Samli, Hale; ŞAMLI, HALE; Ogan, M. Mustafa; Balci, Faruk; BALCI, ÖMER FARUK; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi.; 0000-0002-8015-9032; 0000-0003-2758-5945; 0000-0003-2382-1330; AAH-6192-2021; O-3394-2019
This study was designed to determine the effect of some environmental factors on milk yield and composition in Saanen goats and the effect of CSN3 and AGPAT6 gene polymorphisms on milk production traits. Saanen goats were genotyped for milk traits, and the samples were collected during the lactation, and the milk yield/compositions of each goat were specified. In terms of the CSN3 and AGPAT6 genes, the genotypes were defined by PCR-RFLP. The milk yield (MY), lactation length (LL), protein, fat, total solid (TS), solid not fat (SNF), casein, lactose rates and yields were as follows; 388.9 +/- 17.5 kg, 243 +/- 5.81 days, 3.29 +/- 0.05%, 3.59 +/- 0.07%, 11.60 +/- 0.13%, 8.43 +/- 0.06%, 2.57 +/- 0.04%, 4.31 +/- 0.03%, 11.21 +/- 0.47 kg, 12.79 +/- 0.64 kg, 40.95 +/- 1.82 kg, 29.53 +/- 1.31 kg, 8.82 +/- 0.37 kg, 15.40 +/- 0.74 kg respectively. The determined genotype and allele frequencies of CSN3 and AGPAT6 gene were as follows; FF (%99.20), MF (%0.80), F (0.996), M (0.004); GG (%12), GC (%43.20), CC (%44.80), G (0.336), C (0.664). The impacts of lactation length on all milk yield parameters (protein, fat, TS, SNF, casein, lactose. MY) (P<0.001); the age on all milk yield parameters (P<0.001) and the protein, fat, SNF, casein rates (P<0.05), the TS rate and LL (P<0.01) were found to be significant. The birth type was not found to significantly affect any milk yield parameters. Although Saanen goats showed the variation for the AGPAT6 gene (g.9263C>G), the herd was found to be monomorphic (FF) for the CSN3 gene. The effect of the AGPAT6 gene on milk traits in Saanen goats was determined not to be statistically significant. Environmental factors, such as maternal age and lactation length, were found to significantly affect some milk traits in Saanen goats. So consideration of factors such as maternal age or lactation length could be useful for improving breeding strategies for dairy goats.

Introduction: The seizure is one of the most common neurological problems in neonatal intensive care units (NICU). Its frequency and etiology differ between preteen and term babies. This study aimed to investigate the properties, causes, response to treatment, and prognostic factors of neonatal seizures in term and preterm babies.Materials and Methods: The files of patients with a diagnosis of neonatal seizure in the NICU between 01/01/2014 and 01/09/2019 were analyzed retrospectively. Gross motor function classification, hearing test results and epilepsy rates were examined for neurological outcomes. Results: A total of 86 patients (43 preterm and 43 term infants) were included in this study. The most common etiological factors were hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) (35%) in term infants and intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterm infants (54%). The most common seizure type was subtle seizures in preterm babies and clonic seizures in term babies. The first seizure day was more on the first day and between the 4-7 days in term babies and after seventh days in preterm babies (p <0.05). The onset time of seizures in preterm babies was more after seven days at IVH, and on the first day at HIE (p<0.05). Status epilepticus frequency is higher in preterm (30%) than term (9.3%) (p = 0.015). The response rate to phenobarbital treatment was 71% in term infants and 50% in preterm infants (p = 0.06). According to the criteria (death, epilepsy, hearing loss, autism and gross motor function scale> 2) in our study, the poor prognosis rates were (52%) in term infants and (75%) in preterm infants (p = 0.051).Conclusion: In the etiology of neonatal seizures, IVH in preterm infants and HIE in term infants were the first. The neurological outcomes of patients who had convulsions in the neonatal period should be followed closely.

Music plays an important role in students' language development. Because the process of acquiring and developing language skills of the individual and learning to make music work have many similarities. In this quasi-experimental study, teaching the word in L1 with music with the normal intelligence and development level of 2nd-grade students on the learning of the meaning of the word and ensuring the permanence of the word has been examined. A quasi-experimental design with the experiment and control group was used in the study. In the study words, whose meanings are unlikely to be known by the students, in contexts, and success tests prepared to measure these words' meanings were used as data collection tools. The research was carried out with 43 second-grade students, and the data were analyzed with an ANOVA test. According to the study results, it is concluded that the teaching of vocabulary with music, both the meaning of the word and providing the persistence of learning, was found to be useful. Besides, when the permanence of the words whose meaning is learned is examined, it was revealed that teaching vocabulary with music also supports permanent learning.

Background: Pulmonary arterial (PA) wave reflection provides additional information for assessing right ventricular afterload, but its applications is hampered by the need for invasive pressure and flow measurements. We tested the hypothesis that PA pressure and flow waveforms estimated by Doppler echocardiography could be used to quantify PA wave reflection. Methods: Doppler echocardiographic images of tricuspid regurgitation and right ventricular outflow tract flow used to estimate PA pressure and flow waveforms were acquired simultaneously with direct measurements with a dual sensor-tipped catheter under various hemodynamic conditions in a canine model of pulmonary hypertension (n = 8). Wave separation analysis was performed on echo-Doppler derived as well as catheter derived waveforms to separate PA pressure into forward (Pf) and backward (Pb) pressures and derive wave reflection coefficient (RC) defined as the ratio of peak Pb to peak Pf.Results: Wave reflection indices by echo-Doppler agreed well with corresponding indices by catheter (Pb: mean difference = 0.4 mmHg, 95% limits of agreement = -4.3 to 5.0 mmHg; RC: bias = 0.13, 95% limits of agreement = -0.25 to 0.26). RC correlated negatively with PA compliance. Conclusion: This echo-Doppler method yields reasonable measurement of reflected wave in the pulmonary circulation, paving the way to a more integrative assessment of pulmonary hemodynamics in the clinical setting.

This study applies conjoint analysis in order to evaluate consumer preferences for the product attributes of apple and it aims to forecasting the importance of the product charachter and attribute levels. In addition, environmental awareness of consumers, and environmentally friendly consumption behavior researched. A previous study by Manola (1990) has shown conjoint analysis provides results that might not be obtained from a survey where respondents are asked to directly state their assessment of the importance attributes. The results give us information about the trade-offs that consumers make between price, crispness, size, flavor, color of apple. According to the conjoint analysis results and the survey findings price is an important attribute that consumers take into account during the decision process of buying apples. The results show that price is the most critical attribute; it is almost twice as important as the second critical attribute which is color.

Auxetic structures, which have a negative Poisson's ratio, have good mechanical energy/impact absorption properties. These structures have found application in sandwich composites in the aerospace and defence industries, in the production of armour or protective sports equipment. In this study, the mechanical behaviour of the auxetic honeycomb structure in different directions (in-plane and out-of-plane) under impact loading was investigated. For the in-plane (x and y) and out-of-plane (z) directions, boxes with an auxetic honeycomb structure were produced by material extrusion method using Power ABS filament. In the experimental study, dynamic tests were carried out with a drop test machine. Besides, explicit analyses were performed by creating finite element models for these 3 directions. The experimental and numerical results have shown that the energy absorption property of auxetic honeycomb geometry is superior in the case of out-of-plane loading, in agreement with each other. In in-plane loadings, crush force efficiency (CFE) and crush forces were lower.

A qualitative research on the social and economic dimensions of tibb al nabawi practices
(Din Bilimleri Akad Araştırma Merkezi, 2021-01-01) Bilgin, Vejdi; Turan, Sümeyra Ünalan; BİLGİN, VEJDİ; ÜNALAN TURAN, SÜMEYRA; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/İlahiyat Fakültesi/Din Sosyolojisi Anabilim Dalı; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/İlahiyat Fakültesi/Din Sosyolojisi Anabilim Dalı; JDK-9518-2023; CDV-1489-2022
In the present study, the religious-health is discussed on the relationship between religion and health focusing in Tibb al-Nabawi, which is at the center of religion-health intersection. The purpose of the study was to reveal the effects of Sunnah in the health-related experiences of individuals, the processes of turning to Tibb Al-Nabawi, positive and negative outcomes of the sector with the eyes of the participants, and the legitimacy function of religion in healthcare. In this study, which was conducted with the phenomenology design, the data were obtained with in-depth interviews conducted with nine females and six male participants. The study group was created from people who applied Tibb al-Nabawi treatments. As a result of the study, it was determined that religion is effective in preferring these practices, especially for those who have religious identity. These people also choose religious- traditional practitioners who did these procedures by reading verses and prayers instead of clinics and hospitals in the scope of Traditional and Complementary Medicine (GETAT) for Hijama (The Wet Cupping Therapy) application. Especially the participants who graduated from Theology Faculty believed that Tibb al-Nabawi treatments became an economic sector, and that religion was used as a means of legitimacy and abuse of religious emotions in this sector. Although the tendency to individualize in healthcare comes to the forefront in the behavior of applying to Tibb al-Nabawi, the relations between religion and health in participants, who are affiliated with Aidin Salih school, seems to have changed from an individual sphere to a religious-health-based movement.

A proof of a conjecture on the convolution of harmonic mappings and some related problems
(Springer, 2021-09-23) Yalçın, Sibel; Ebadian, A.; Azizi, Saman; YALÇIN TOKGÖZ, SİBEL; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi; 0000-0002-0243-8263; AAE-9745-2020
Recently, Kumar, et al. proposed a conjecture concerning the convolution of a generalized right half-plane mapping with a vertical strip mapping. They verified this conjecture for n = 1, 2, 3 and 4. Moreover, it was proved only for ss =./2. By using of a new method, we settle this conjecture in the affirmative way for all n 2 N and ss 2 (0,.). Moreover, we apply this method to prove some results on the convolutions of harmonic mappings. The proposed new method simplifies calculations and remarkably shortens the proof of the results.

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a rare disease, and especially for classic KS, a gap exists in the literature about which chemotherapeutics should be given. Here we present our institutional data on the demographic characteristics, treatment, and treatment efficacy in 16 patients with KS treated with chemotherapy. We retrospectively analyzed the demographic and clinical characteristics of and the chemotherapeutic agents administered to the 16 patients with KS diagnosed in our center based on the medical records obtained. The median age, gender, KS type, involved site, cytotoxic agents administered, progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR), and safety profiles of the patients were evaluated. The median age at disease onset was 61.07 years (range, 39.4-85.8 years). Among the patients, one had immunosuppression-related KS, four had acquired immune deficiency syndrome-related KS, and 11 had classic KS. Regarding the first-line cytotoxic therapy, seven patients received pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD), six received paclitaxel, two received oral etoposide, and one received the doxorubicin, bleomycin, and vincristine regimen. The Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the PFS was 39.9 months (95% confidence interval (CI), 7.7-72.0). In the first-line setting, a significant difference in PFS was observed between the PLD-and paclitaxel-treated groups (unreached vs. 12.8 months; p = 0.033). The OS was 66.1 months (95% CI, 30.2-102.0). The ORR and DCR of the 16 patients were 43.8%, and 81.3%, respectively. No grade 3 or 4 toxicity was observed. This retrospective study showed that among the most preferred chemotherapeutic agents, PLD seems better than paclitaxel in terms of PFS and response rates, and it showed a good safety profile in patients with KS.
