Abstract
This study was performed to establish techniques used in the isolation and identification of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and investigate the presence of V. parahaemolyticus in fish and clams. Between June 1998 and June 2000, a total of 46 fish samples including 14 anchovies, 12 whiting, 10 horse mackerel and 10 sardines collected from fish markets in Bursa and a total of 70 clam samples collected from shellfish stations in Sakarya and Kocaeli districts were tested for V. parahaemolyticus.
Fish samples were found to be free of V. parahaemolyticus. It was detected that total isolation from clams was 10 (14.3%). All the V. parahaemolyticus isolates were Kanagawa and urea hydrolysis negative.
