Abstract
Artichoke, a Mediterranean origined plant species with high nutritional value, is widely used in human nutrition and pharmaceutical industries. In recent years, a significant increase has been observed in the amount of artichoke production and production area in Turkey as well as the rest of the world. Conventional artichoke in Turkey has been intensively produced in the provinces of Izmir, Bursa, Aydın, Antalya and Adana. In 2011, while 33460 tonnes of conventional artichoke production in Turkey is performed in a total of 2444 hectares of land, 91.38 tons of organic artichokes are produced in the provinces of Adana, Antalya, Bursa, Eskisehir, Istanbul, Izmir, Manisa and Zonguldak. Turkey's conventional artichoke exports value, (137506 $) was lower than conventional artichoke imports value (2874455 $) in 2011. On the basis of producer and retailer, the prices of organic artichokes were found to be higher than the conventional artichoke’s. In this study, developments of conventional and organic artichoke production, foreign trade situation, conventional and organic artichoke marketing channel and the prices are observed and possible solutions regarding production and marketing of artichokes are provided.
