Publication A design-based approach to enhancing technical drawing skills in design and engineering education using vr and ar tools(Scitepress, 2019-01-01) Huerta, O.; Unver, E.; Dawood, M.; Kofoğlu, M.; Ivanov, V; Kerren, A; Hurter, C; Braz, J; Kuş, Alparslan; Arslan, Rıdvan; ARSLAN, RİDVAN; Kofoğlu, Muhammed; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi; Kerren, A; Hurter, C; Braz, J; 0000-0002-0111-6879; 0000-0001-5054-3263; V-1754-2018There are concerns from higher education (HE) institutions and industry about the decline in standards of technical drawings (TDs) due to the lack of understanding of basic geometric construction and the conventions of drafting skills that underpin the best practices. There is growing evidence that simulations/animations along with augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) technologies can improve learners' engagement, competence, and skills: especially when compared to traditional didactic methods. However, this approach to teaching and learning (T&L) is difficult when studied at distance, or without access to the appropriate technologies to carry out the suggested activities. Leading to the need to develop appropriate methods and content that suit this pedagogical problem. This paper describes the development of an AR/VR application to support the T&L of design and engineering students in education and industry. Using a multi-disciplinary design-based research methodology, this European (UK, Bulgaria, Turkey) funded research project combines pedagogy and technology to approach TDs education problems; and to develop an AR/VR education solution to address learning difficulties within the different critical TDs categories identified. This development is based on findings from an international study in three different categories covering the perception of TDs education, assessing of TDs knowledge and ability, and expectations of TDs education. This research project also covers the difficulties and good practices of multi-disciplinary teams for developing TDs and ARNR contents where the approaches to T&L may differ between practices.Publication A meshless practical laparoscopic sacrohysteropexy modification and long-term outcomes(Elsevier, 2020-11-01) Orhan, Adnan; Özerkan, Kemal; Kasapoglu,Işıl; Ocakoğlu, Gökhan; Aslan, Kiper; Uncu, Gürkan; ORHAN, ADNAN; ÖZERKAN, KEMAL; KASAPOĞLU, IŞIL; OCAKOĞLU, GÖKHAN; ASLAN, MÜNİR KİPER; UNCU, GÜRKAN; Uludağ Üniversitesi/ Tıp Fakültesi/Doğum ve Jinekoloji Bölümü/Ürojinekol ve Minimal İnvas Jinekol Ünitesi; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Sağlık Bilimleri Enstitüsü/Biyoistatistik Anabilim Dalı; 0000-0002-7558-8166; 0000-0002-1114-6051; 0000-0002-9277-7735; V-5292-2019; AER-7173-2022; AAH-9694-2021; AAT-3479-2021; AAH-9791-2021; AAH-5180-2021; K-2269-2016Study Objective: To describe a new modification of laparoscopic sacrohysteropexy without using a mesh and report the 3-year outcomes.Design: A prospective cohort study.Setting: Minimally Invasive Gynecology Unit, Bursa Uludag University Hospital, Turkey.Patients: Women who were diagnosed with >= stage 2 uterine prolapse.Interventions: A laparoscopic sacrohysteropexy modification using a polyester fiber suture instead of a standard polypropylene mesh.Measurements and Main Results: The primary outcome was the anatomic success of the repair, with success defined as objective parameters using the pelvic organ prolapse quantification system. The secondary outcomes were subjective outcomes, which were assessed using the quality-of-life scales. Forty-seven women who underwent the procedure were followed up for a minimum of 3 years. Forty-four of the 47 patients had stage 0 or 1 prolapse at the end of the second year, according to the primary outcomes. The anatomic success rate was 93.6%. In the secondary outcomes, 2 patients were not satisfied with their pelvic floor after the second year. The subjective cure rate was 95.7%. There was a statistically significant improvement in both pelvic organ prolapse quantification and quality-of-life scores in the third postoperative year. The mean operating time was 84.6 minutes, and the mean estimated blood loss was 21.3 mL. There were no bladder or bowel complications in the perioperative or postoperative period. Conclusion: Laparoscopic sacrohysteropexy can be performed safely with this meshless modification in uterine prolapse as an alternative. Design-Cross-sectional study. Animals-102 dogs (112 elbow joints) suspected to have FMCP Procedures-Elbows were examined ultrasonographically prior to surgery for evidence of fragmentation, fissuring, or deformation of the medial coronoid process; thickening of the joint capsule; joint effusion; and secondary new bone formation. Results were compared with intraoperative findings. Results-At surgery, 51 (46%) joints had free fragments, 55 (49%) had nondisplaced fragments, and 6 (5%) did not have any fragments or fissures. Fragments were not seen ultrasonographically in 23 of the 51 (45%) joints in which a free fragment was found during surgery or in 50 of the 55 (91%) joints in which a nondisplaced fragment was found during surgery. Accuracy of using ultrasonographic evidence of any medial coronoid process abnormality (ie, a medial coronoid process fragment, deformation of the medial coronoid process, or both) for diagnosis of medial coronoid process fragmentation was 77%. The kappa coefficient for the level of agreement between ultrasonographic (ie, any medial coronoid process abnormality) and surgical findings was -0.014, indicating that there was no agreement. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-Results suggested that ultrasonography was of limited diagnostic value in detecting FMCP in dogs.Item Acquisition of English ergative verbs by Turkish students: Yesterday and today(Elsevier, 2009) Uzunboylu, H.; Çavuş, N.; Can, Abdullah; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Eğitim Fakültesi/Yabancı Diller Eğitimi Bölümü.; 26656513300This study tries to diagnose the acquisition of a special subclass of intransitive verbs, namely ergatives, by Turkish learners of English by comparing the (partial) results of the study carried out in 2000 (as an MA Thesis) with the results of its replication conducted in 2007. In both studies all the variables were the same. Proficiency levels were determined via a cloze test and a grammaticality judgment test with various subclasses of intransitives was administered. Results of the study have revealed that proficiency levels of the participants have increased in seven years, but paired ergative verbs have remained the most problematic subclass of intransitives in both studies.Item Adjunctive use of the uterine artery resistance index in the preoperative prediction of myometrial invasion in endometrial carcinoma(Academic Press Inc Elsevier Science, 1999) Yalçın, Ömer T.; Özalp, Sinan; Develioğlu, Osman H.; Bilgin, Tufan; Ozan, Hakan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Kadın Hastalıkları ve Doğum Anabilim Dalı.Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of transvaginal ultrasonography (TVUS) and uterine artery flow velocimetry indices in the preoperative detection of deep myometrial invasion in endometrial carcinoma (EC). Methods. Thirty-nine patients with EC underwent TVUS and Doppler flow velocimetry studies, during which endometrial, myometrial, and uterine measurements, presence and depth of myometrial invasion, and pulsatility and resistance indices (PI and RI, respectively) of uterine arteries were noted. TVUS and Doppler findings were correlated with pathological findings obtained by surgical staging. The respective diagnostic accuracies of these variables, and of age and grade, in detecting deep myometrial invasion were assessed with the use of histological findings as the standard. Results. All patients with Grade 3 tumors had deep myometrial invasion, compared to 19% of patients with Grade 1 tumors. The mean age of patients with deep invasion was significantly higher, and their mean PI and RI were significantly lower, than patients with lesser degrees of invasion. While the sensitivity and specificity of TVUS in detecting deep invasion were 37 and 90%, respectively, the corresponding figures for age, grade, and uterine artery RI, found to be independent discriminators of deep invasion, were in the range of 58-84% and 60-70%. The combined use of the latter three parameters resulted in a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 95%. Conclusions. Our findings indicate that TVUS is unreliable in diagnosing deep myometrial invasion. Detection rates of this pathological feature can be greatly improved, however, with the concomitant use of age, tumor grade, and uterine artery RI.Item Adsorption characteristics evaluation of R134A and R404A on different adsorbents(Bulgarian Acad Science, 2016) Kılıç, Muhsin; Gönül, Ersan; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Mühendislik Fakültesi/Makine Mühendisliği Bölümü.; 0000-0003-2113-4510; O-2253-2015In order to design adsorption employed cooling or refrigeration system, it is inevitably required the knowledge of the adsorption isotherms and the isosteric adsorption heat for the assorted adsorbent/adsorbate pair. The physical adsorption phenomena occurs mainly within the pores and on the surface of the adsorbent. Since, the characteristics of each adsorbent-adsorbate pair is different than others. The knowledge of adsorption characteristics with the variation of temperature and pressure is necessary for the evaluation. However, these data are usually unavailable from the manufacturers of adsorbents. The objective of this study is to evaluate adsorption characteristics of R134A (HFC-134A) and R404A (HFC-404A) on different adsorbents experimentally by a constant volume variable pressure method at different adsorption temperatures ranging from 20 to 50 C and for pressures up to 5 bar. The forms of the isotherms obtained from the experimental measurements are similar in all cases and comparable to those reported in the literature for commercially available different adsorbents. Adsorption parameters are evaluated from the isotherms using the Dubinin-Astakhov (DA) equation. The concentration dependence of the isosteric enthalpies of adsorption is extracted from the obtained data. Further, the enthalpy of adsorption data are extracted, and correlations are provided for the different specimens investigated. These data are essential for the design of a thermally driven adsorption chiller employed the assorted pair.Item The affects of the process improvement to business performance(Varazdin Development and Entrepreneurship Agency, 2013) Filipovic, D.; Urnaut, A. G.; Kaygusuz, Yeşim; Uludağ Üniversitesi. The main aim of the businesses is to make profit and grow sustainably accordingly. The elements which enable companies to reach this aim are price, cost and customer satisfaction. While the price is determined in the competitive market, cost is shaped in the business processes. The customer satisfaction, on the other hand, is to what extent the output of these processes satisfied the customers. Process consists of the stages which start with taking an order from the customer and end with the delivery of the order. Should the business be likened to a chain, each link represents a process (a function). In order to improve the performance the weak link needs to be strengthen. Strengthening the weak links will only be possible by determining the halting points of the process and removing them. When the notion of the process and its improvement dealt with, the notion of value emerges. The value created in the process means cost in the output, quality and speed improvement for the company. Hence, creating values results with the customer satisfaction. Process value analysis, is the overall operations of the definition and analysis of some certain processes. It defines all the activities from production stage to its presentation to the customer, the inputs used in the operations. At the end of the analysis whether the activities in the process are necessary and if they create added value or not is considered Activity creating an added value adds value to the product the customer wanted, whereas the ones which didnt create added value cause cost and spent time to increase and do not add value to the product from customers point of view. The use of excessive amount of input, cause the costs of the product not creating added value and accordingly in the product costs to increase. The removal of these activities would provide a decrease in the expenses and strengthen the competitive situation of the company. The implementation focusing on the process and activities forming it, analyzing these methods and improvement efforts must be continuous. Continuous improvement works would return to the company in the end, as profit increase, shareholder, customer satisfaction. In this study, effects of the process improvement to the business performance will be studied.Item An alternative assessment scale for student work produced in the architectural studio(Elsevier Science, 2010) Uzunboylu, H.; Taneli, Yavuz; Tok, Selay Yurtkuran; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Mimarlık Fakültesi/Mimarlık Bölümü.; 0000-0003-0349-1098; C-3035-2008; 36544397500; 36544333500This paper investigates the utility of a scale specifically designed to evaluate work produced in the architectural studio. Material and Methods: This study was conducted in 2006-2007 education year in Bursa/Turkey. Ambulatory activity in participants between 18-85 years (women, n= 1000; men, n= 915) assessed by daily pedometer steps. The relations of parameters, such as their age, body mass index (BMI), education, annual income, marital status, number of children, smoking and alcohol consumption were determined with number of daily steps. Results: Median (interqr. range) steps/day in women and men respectively were 7854 (5366) and 8760 (5596) steps/day (p= 0.000). In both women and men, there was significantly negative relation between daily step number and age (women r= -.268, p= 0.000; men r= -.126, p=0.000), and BMI (women r= -.148, p= 0.000; men r= -.074, p= 0.044) values; there was a significantly positive relation between daily step number and annual income. Conclusion: Ambulatory activities of Turkish women are less than men. The finding of this study revealed that in both genders, as the age and BMI increases, daily step numbers decrease, and as annual family income increases, daily step number increases as well. As the number of the children increases, occurs a decrease in the daily step numbers, especially of the women.Item Analysis of genetic diversity of local olive varieties in Turkey by AFLP markers(Int Soc Horticultural Science, 2011-12-31) Hummer, K. E.; Şeker, Murat; Gündoğdu, Ayşe; İpek, Meryem S.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Ziraat Fakültesi/Bahçe Bitkileri Bölümü.; 16031208900Olive (Olea europaea L.) has great genetic variation in Turkey as important crop due to its economic value. There are many cultivars, types and landraces having good potential as a source of genes for productivity, oil quality and fruit characters which are difficult to differentiate by using morphological characters in different ecological conditions of Turkey. Therefore, genotypic identification studies are important for olive breeding, olive industry and genome analysis. In this study, local olive genotypes which are grown in Adana, Artvin, Aydin, Balikesir, Bursa, Canakkale, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Izmir, Manisa, Mersin and Tekirdag provinces of Turkey were investigated. Most of the genotypes in this study were used for the first time for evaluation of their genetic structures. Genetic diversity of local genotypes was estimated using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers. Sixty three olive genotypes were analyzed with five EcoRI-MseI primer combinations. Informative AFLP markers were generated and scored as binary data. Five primer pairs used in AFLP analysis detected 173 loci, of which 135 (78%) were polymorphic. Similarity coefficient matrix was computed to cluster the data and to draw precise relationships among the 63 studied olive genotypes. The generated dendrogram revealed three major groups.Item An analysis of teacher's views on the unit regarding cell division and heredity(Elsevier, 2014) Özbudak, Zeynep; Beşoluk , S.; Özkan, Muhlis; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Eğitim Fakültesi. In this study, it was aimed that the views of the science teachers on the 8th grade unit, "Cell Division and Heredity" be analyzed. The sampling of the study comprises 160 science teachers working in the City of Kocaeli and the central districts. In order to determine the appropriateness of the targets and acquisitions required by the teachers during their teaching the unit, Cell Division and Heredity and also to determine what the learning-teaching activities, the materials, and the assessment and evaluation activities are, a questionnaire titled, The Evaluation Questionnaire for the 8th grade Unit, 'Cell Division and Heredity' (EQU) was conducted for 160 Science teachers. The opinions/views of the teachers were received by raising open-ended questions through the same form, as well. Acording to the findings obtained, the teachers state that students have difficulty in understanding the unit in which they experience misconceptions. Although the teachers think that the acquisitions are appropriate for providing efficient learning and acquiring study skills through scientific methods, they point out that the objectives are not in accord with the structure of the unit. Even though the teachers express that the subjects are dealt with from the inner circles to the remote/outer ones, from the concrete/tangible to the abstract, and from simple to complex, the results of the analysis suggest that the teachers cannot teach and deal with this unit easily and smoothly. The reason for this was stated as the fact that the unit was not suitable enough for performing experiments and observations on, that the duration was insufficient, that the unit was not interesting enough for the students, and that it could not be associated with the current life on an adequate level. It is considered that the evaluation of the views to be received from the teachers will contribute to dealing with the unit, Cell Division and Heredity and to the development of the education process and evaluation elements.Item The analysis of the factors affecting the acquisition and usage of the contemporary knowledge in the social studies education: Families(Elsevier, 2009) Uzunboylu, H.; Çavuş, N.; Doğan, Yadigar; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Eğitim Fakültesi/İlköğretim Bölümü/Sosyal Bilgiler Eğitimi Anabilim Dalı.; 26656529900The present study was conducted with the aim of analyzing the methods of and the factors affecting the acquisition of comtemporary knowledge in the social studies lessons in primary education programs according to the criteria required by the age of information. Students were asked to draw a rectangle in the course of a mathematics lesson and a flower in that of science. The sample included 50 students from the primary education department at Uludag University, Bursa, Turkey. Their responses were analyzed using the same grid. Two main categories were distinguished: the drawing of a concept's structure (conceptual, iconic, redundant/missing drawing) and labeling/coding of the concept's parts (comprehensive, partial, incorrect labeling). The first finding shows that students who produced a response categorized as conceptual and iconic drawings were identified as in the comprehensive labeling category. Thus, there may be a relationship between conceptual and iconic drawings and conceptual comprehension. Another finding concerns the similarities in the categorization of responses for both maths and science questions. Students who made iconic and conceptual drawings were able to label more correctly than students who drew a redundant/missing drawing. In addition, it can also be said that for the biology drawing the whole flower was observed whereas in geometry an abstract subject which is not generally observed was made physical by the drawing.Publication Anatomic characteristics and dimensions of the nasopalatine canal: A radiographic study using cone-beam computed tomography(Via Medica, 2021-01-01) Görürgöz, Cansu; Öztaş, B.; GÖRÜRGÖZ, CANSU; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi/Dentomaksillofasiyal Radyoloji Anabilim Dalı; 0000-0002-3083-1660; AAQ-4576-2020Background: Description of the nasopalatine canal (NPC) is important for planning surgical treatment and comprehension of the morphology and pathogenesis of lesions that occur in the anterior maxilla. The goal of this study was to analyse the dimensions and anatomic characteristics of the NPC on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans, to determine the incidence of anatomical variation; and to assess the correlations of these variables with age, gender, and dental status.Materials and methods: A total of 320 individual CBCT images were included. Reformatted sagittal, coronal and axial slices were evaluated. Sagittal images were used for measurements of the NPC and to classified shape and direction-course of the NPC. Coronal images were used to analyse the NPC division levels and axial images were used to detect the number of palatal and nasal opening. Results: The mean NPC length was 11.45 +/- 2.50 mm; statistically significant differences were detected between males and females (p < 0.05). Mean nasopalatine angle was 76.26 +/- 8.12 degrees; significant differences were detected in sagittal and coronal classifications. The most common canal was: funnel-shaped (29%), slanted-curved direction-course (53.1%), middle third division level (43.1%), and one incisive foramen with two Stenson's foramina (1-2) (77.2%).Conclusions: The current study ensures new findings on the literature concerning the description of the anatomical structure of the canal. Also, the study highlights a significant variability in the anatomy and morphology of the NPC. Therefore, three-dimensional analysis of this structure is important for facilitating surgical management and preventing possible complications in this area.Item Anterior cervical xenograft bone fusion with bone and metal plate screw fixation(Medimond S R L, 1999) Yaman, Osman; Aksoy, Kasım; Yılmazlar, Selçuk; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Tıp Fakültesi/Nöroşirurji Anabilim Dalı.; 0000-0003-3633-7919; AAH-5070-2021Progressive neurologic deficit and pseudoarthrosis are important problems in patients with impaired cervical stability or when the stability could not be achieved properly. For this purpose, different surgical approaches and stabilization techniques have been used. We compared the currently used clinical techniques of performing this procedure: corpectomy with xenograft bone fusion (from bovine) plus xenograft bone plaque and screw fixation, and corpectomy with xenograft bone fusion plus metal plaque and screw fixation. Fusion and stability was examined radiographically, biomechanically, and histologically for comparison.Item Antifungal activity of chestnut shell extracts(INT SOC Horticultural Science, 2010) Bounous, G.; Beccaro, G. L.; Kumral, Ayşegül Yıldırım; Yavuz, Mümine; Korukluoğlu, Mihriban; Ertürk, Ümran; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Ziraat Fakültesi/Gıda Mühendisliği Bölümü.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Ziraat Fakültesi/Bahçe Bitkileri Bölümü.; AAG-8415-2021; J-5125-2018; 16039935800; 36814751100; 8213196200; 7801661220Shells of three different chestnut cultivars named as 'Marigoule', 'Maraval' and '52112' ('Vakit Kestanesi') were tested for their antifungal activities against Penicillium roqueforti, Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus parasiticus. Ethanol extracts were obtained by soxhlet extraction and antifungal activities were determined with three point inoculation method and an automated quantitative assay by absorbance measurement at 595 nm on a microplate reader. Results of the two methods demonstrated that ethanol extracts of 'Marigoule' and 'Maraval' retarded the growth of Aspergillus niger but did not inhibit it completely. None of the three extracts inhibited Penicillium roqueforti according to microplate assay; but on the contrary stimulatory effects of '52112' on the mentioned mould were determined. Contradictory results were obtained from two methods concerning the antifungal effect of three extracts, so further studies are needed for the factors causing variations between two methods and the composition of the chestnut shell extracts to determine the antifungal activity more accurately.Item Applicability of nanofiltration in the recovery of chrome tanning wastewater(Elsevier, 2012) Kiril, Berna Mert; Marsh, Nicola; Kestioǧlu, Kadir; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü/Çevre Mühendisliği Bölümü.; 8910702800
