Abstract
In this study, epilepsy has been examined through after its historical development some of the popular treatment methods are given and oonolusions are drawn relating to modern medicine. The historical development of epilepsy is given in the chronological order, methods of cure applied in the past are reported. It has been shown that these oures went hack to prehistorio times. Ways of dealing with epilepsy, which are desoribed here in our study, have been gathered by oral transmission from old inhabitants of Bursa, from herbalists and from people in charge of sacrifioial places (tombs, mausoleums etc.) Social status of informants are shown in a statistical table. These popular oures are mainly of two sorts: The ones in which the cure is expeoted from the use of primitive drugs, that is organic treatment} The other in which suggestion is used as a method of therapy. In oures based on drugs, very simple prescrip tions are used. Comparing these primitive ways of treatment with the methods of modern medicine used at the Bakırköy hospital of mental illnesses, we tried to a draw profitable result. Medical knowledge taken from this hospital is supported by statistical data. It results from our study that of the primitive ways of cure relating to epilepsy those that are organic in essence are prepared by people as simple formulas of medicine, but as they are not based on a scientific approach they give harmful results even when they have a pharmaoological effect. These traditions are compared with modern medical methods and some conclusions are drawn. Popular oures of epilepsy by suggestion are known to have been applied since the oldest ages of man's history. Psychotherapy is being used today in modern psychiatry also. But there is an important difference: Modern psychiatry uses this cure according to scientific principles.
