Abstract
The main aim of this thesis was to analyze social networks within a medium size textile firm established in 1987 in Bursa. With this purpose, a three-phase study was conducted. In the first part, the network topologies of the textile firm have been analyzed by using Maximum Likelihood Estimation Method with the purpose of testing whether or not the degree distributions of networks followed a power law probability distribution. The results showed that the degree distribution of the whole firm, three production departments and administrative unit follows a power law probability distribution. In the second part of the study, the networks in the textile firm have been analyzed by using Organizational Network Analysis Methods. According to the results, the managers of production departments (dyeing, weaving and ready-made) dont have direct communication with administrative unit and top management as a means of problem solving and distribution of work-related information. Besides that, there was also a lack of direct connection among some workers within the departments. The suggestion given to the managers for solving those structural problems was relocating the three production departments and the administrative units close enough to each other so that direct communication and information sharing among those departments and the units are possible. The top management has declared that they have planned to move all units to a building near by the dyeing department soon. In the third part, the relationship between workers individual performance ratings and their social capitals has been analyzed, and a statistically significant relationship has been found. The secondary explanatory variables -such as education level, age, length of service and job grade- were also used in the analysis of binary logistic regression model. It was found that the relationships between workers? performance ratings and all secondary explanatory variables (education level, length of service and job grade)-except age- were statistically significant.
