Abstract
In this day and age, football is the most popular sport sweeping the globe. Football has sometimes caused wars, sometimes ensured peace and sometimes brought countries to the brink of collapse. Therefore, it has been widely considered more than just a sport. In Turkey, football has been a sport which is associated with the elites since the first day it was played. In contrast to today’s world, access to football in the early twentieth century required economic and bureaucratic power. The first footballers, the first executives and the pioneers who founded the clubs in Turkey were all elites. Both during the Empire and the Republican Era, football clubs and political elites were intertwined. This makes it difficult to make a class-based analysis of football in Turkey. Football rivalries in Turkey are not based on any opposing ideology. This ideological absence in football has been filled by nationalism. The Galatasaray Club emerged out of the Mekteb-i Sultani (Galatasaray High School), which was founded in the context of the modernisation movement in response to the Empire's sense of backwardness. The club and the high school have an organic connection that has continued to the present day. It has been observed that High School transforms students in terms of fandom. Despite this, it is obvious that being a Galatasaray High School student goes beyond being a fan.
