Abstract
microRNAs (miRNA) are small and short, non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression in plants, animals and some viruses. miRNAs can bind to target messenger RNA (mRNA) transcripts of protein-coding genes and negatively control their translation or cause mRNA degradation. miRNAs such as apoptosis, differentiation of stem cells, cell cycle regulation and the pathogenesis of cancer may act in many biological processes. miRNAs associated with process of carcinogenesis may function tumor suppressor or oncogenic, according to their mRNA targets. In this review, the effect of miRNAs from epigenetic mechanisms in the pathogenesis of cancer is discussed.
