Abstract
Herbal extracts contain a significant amount of phenolic compounds, which have powerful antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. When these plant extracts are combined with polymers to form films and coating materials, the resulting products exhibit varying physicochemical, mechanical, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties compared to films produced without extracts. These properties make films and coatings suitable for a wide variety of applications. Corchorus olitorius is an annual herb that contains a variety of aromatic and medicinal compounds and is known for its high phenolic content, which provides powerful antioxidant properties. Recent studies have focused on the use of naturally based polymers, such as polysaccharides, to prepare wound dressings. Polysaccharide-based chitosan promotes wound healing while protecting the wound from infections by creating a protective barrier on the wound. Protein-based gelatin is also used in bio-based applications due to its ability to support faster healing of damaged tissues. In this study, chitosan/gelatin films containing Corchorus olitorius extract were produced quickly and effectively by solvent casting method. In this context, different amounts of Corchorus olitorius extract were added to the polymer mixture solutions and then the effect of this extract concentration on the antioxidant activity of the films was investigated. In addition, the effects of the extract concentration on the morphological, spectroscopic, thermal, optical and mechanical properties of the obtained chitosan/gelatin polymer films and their antibacterial activity were also studied.
