Musculoskeletal system assessment

Abstract

The musculoskeletal system is responsible for providing support, stability, and movement to the body and also protecting vital organs and tissues. It includes bones, muscles, cartilage, ligaments, and other connective tissues. Since connective tissue is found throughout the body, musculoskeletal diseases affect not only joints but also many organs and systems. Assessment of the musculoskeletal system ranges from taking a history to physical examination and diagnostic tests, and even to the evaluation of psychosocial problems that concern the individual and his/her family. The first step in planning a holistic care in musculoskeletal diseases is the multidimensional evaluation of the patient.
