The evaluation of historical khans district in Bursa city centre in terms of vitality

Abstract

Nowadays there are discussions on the role of historical city centres in the current city use in the planning/ architecture environment over different but related concepts. Within this framework, attempts in this kind of field can be explained as a vision and action plan designed for the aims of creating a solution to the problems of the changing- transforming area, providing permanent solutions to economic, social, physical, and environmental conditions of the region, and turning regional threats into the opportunities. The main aims of these plans are; to stop the physical collapse in the area, to ensure the sustainability of the historical urban texture, to increase the quality of urban life, to activate the cultural potentials, and to ensure the participation of the relevant stakeholders for protecting the dynamic structure of the city. In this context, this study aims is to clarify the conservation and transformation of the historical city centre within the framework of urban continuity, discuss Khans District located in the historical city centre of Bursa in the direction of mentioned aims, in terms of a historical perspective and current condition. As a method in the study; literature and archive reviews are made, surveys and observations made in the area are evaluated, and as a result, inferences are made about the vitality and sustainability of the area.
