Rupture of the muscles and their tendons can occur in any animal either during normal activity or during unusual physical stress. The avulsion of a tendon from its insertion onto the bone or rupture of its musculotendinous junction is almost always traumatic (Hulse and Johnson, 1999; Aron, 1990). The tendons most likely to be lacerated or ruptured in small animal orthopedic practice are calcanean tendon, gastrocnemius muscle, quadriceps tendon and triceps tendon (Aron, loc. cit.; Kramer et al., 1998; Rewerts. et al., 1997).
