'Movement and direction' with project studies in design basics

Abstract

Basic Design course for first year students is a course which includes theorical information about the elements and principles of art and also practical sessions in two and three dimensional levels. This course aims to help students to observe the environment in a sensible way, learn how to differentiate and judge and increase their visual expressivity by means of introducing certain art concepts, art work and artists. During the course they are expected to create forms by using new materials and working on new problems.This study is an research article. The research consists of the answers of the questionnaires done by students of "basic design" course during the academic year 2004-2005. A total of 74 students attended to the research and it has been repeated for the 2007-08 academic year with a total of 68 attendants.Within the Project, the students are expected to express one of the principles of basic design 'motion and dimention' and 'form' in elements of basic design, starting from different sports, by defining it using different materias and by creating three dimentional forms. Artworks of the students later exhibited at the department buil ding and at the exhibition hall students were asked to fill in the questionnaires provided.The aim of this research, is to teach the students the will to act by their own to reach valuable knowledge by providing them various techniques to work on a project and encourage them to be a part of an exhibition.
