Linezolid is an oxazolidinone antibacterial agent that acts by inhibiting the initiation of bacterial protein synthesis. Linezolid has a wide spectrum of activity against grampositive organisms including vancomycin resistant Enterococcus faecium, vancomycin resistant Enterococcus faecalis, methicillin resistant staphylococci and penicillin resistant pneumococci. Linezolid has a good bioavability orally and could be switched from parenteral to oral therapy while treating serious infections. Linezolid is well tolerated inchildren.
