Abstract
The evolution of Intensive Care Medicine and integrated team management has greatly improved the survival of critically ill patients. But, chronic critical illness is associated with prolonged immobility, intubation and intensive care unit stay and as a consequence of these problems deconditioning, muscle weakness, depression and reduced quality of life are the main complications. The recovery from these complications are very slow, in order to reduce the detrimental effect of these problems rehabilitation should begin as soon as possible and must continue after discharge from the hospital.
