As the global human population continues to burgeon, it has spurred the expansion of various industries. This surge in industrial activity has, in turn, intensified the demand for an ample water supply and the imperative for high-effluent quality post-treatment. Addressing these twin imperatives has become a paramount necessity. One of the most effective solutions for achieving this balance is the deployment of Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology, renowned for its ability to efficiently eliminate both organic and inorganic pollutants as an integral component of wastewater treatment systems. MBR facilities seamlessly merge the biological treatment process with advanced membrane filtration techniques, endowing them with a plethora of advantages over traditional methods, such as the activated sludge process. Consequently, MBR systems have become pivotal in the treatment of both municipal and industrial wastewater streams. This chapter embarks on an exploration of the fundamental concepts underlying MBR plants, offering insights into the latest advancements in each side associated with MBR technology. This chapter combines the endeavors invested in novel MBR processes, accentuating the evolving landscape of this technology. To address the current limitations that hinder the practical scalability of MBRs, this chapter concludes by elucidating the existing challenges and charting the course for future research initiatives in this pivotal field. It underscores the significance of continuous innovation to maximize the potential of MBRs on a larger scale.
