Graham Oppy’nin natüralizmi ve teizm eleştirisi üzerine bir değerlendirme

Abstract

İnsanlık tarihi boyunca varlığı anlamlandırma uğraşı devam etmiştir. Bu uğraş içerisinde varlık ve evren hakkında çeşitli iddialar ortaya atılmıştır. Bu iddiaların odağında teizm ve natüralizm bulunmaktadır. Evrenin ve varlıkların var oluşunu doğaüstü bir güç olarak kabul edilen Tanrı’ya bağlayan teizme, doğaüstü varlıkları reddeden ve varlığın anlamına dair sorduğumuz sorulara cevaplarımızı doğada bulabileceğimizi iddia eden natüralizm karşı çıkmıştır. Natüralizmin güçlü savunucularından biri olan Graham Oppy, natüralizmin savunmasını yaparken bazı kriterler sunmuştur. Graham Oppy için “hangi iddia daha doğrudur?” sorusundan daha önemli olan “hangi iddia bu kriterler dahilinde daha doğrudur?” sorusudur. Oppy bir iddianın diğerinden daha tercih edilebilir olması için iki şart öne sürmüştür. Bu şartlar, iddianın başarılı argümanlar içermesi ve ikinci olarak bu ele alınan iddianın karşıt iddiadan daha basit olması, bilgilerdeki uyumun daha iyi olması, daha açıklayıcı olması ve gelecekte daha fazla fayda sağlaması açısından daha üstün olmasıdır. Oppy’nin iddialarında, her ne kadar kendisi teizmin başarılı bir argümanı olmadığını ve natüralizmin yukarıda verilen tüm kriterlerde daha üstün olduğunu iddia etse de bazı çelişkiler olduğu görülmüştür. Teizmin başarılı argümanı yoktur iddiası tartışmalıdır çünkü Oppy’nin başarılı argüman tanımı yeterince açık ve anlaşılır değildir. Bunun yanında teizmin daha karmaşık ve kapalı olduğu iddiası da gözden geçirilmelidir. Bir teist için Tanrı cevabı insanlığın içinde bulunduğu sorulara kısa yoldan bir cevap değildir. Tanrı kavramının açıklama gerektirdiği doğrudur. Fakat bir natüralist için de doğa ele alınan sorulara karşı kısa yoldan bir cevap olmamalıdır. Oppy bize, çalışmamızda da ele aldığımız üzere natüralizm savunmasında natüralizmin teizmden daha tercih edilebilir olduğunu iddia ederken natüralizmin neden tercih edilmesi gerektiğinin sebebi konusunda açık ve anlaşılır bir cevap sunmamaktadır.

Since the down of human history, efforts have been made to understand the existence of creatures. Inthis effort, theories about creatures and the universe have been put forward. Theism and naturalism are atthe center of these theories under these efforts. Theism, which attributes the existence of the universe andbeings to God as a supernatural power is opposed to naturalism, which rejects supernatural beings and claims that we can find answers to the questions we ask about the meaning of existence in nature. Graham Oppy, one of the strong defenders of naturalism, presented criteria different from those of other philosophers who defend naturalism. The critical question here is whether the theory of naturalism is preferable to naturalism. Oppy put forward two conditions for one claim to be considered preferable. These conditions are: firstly, a theory should contain successful arguments, and secondly, the claim should be simpler than the opposing claim, and there should be harmony in the knowledge; the theorymust be more explanatory and bring more future benefits. It is seen that Graham Oppy defended the theory that theism has no successful arguments and that naturalism is preferable to theism regarding the criteria he put forward. The claim that theism has no successful argument is controversial because his definition of a successful argument is unclear. Besidesthis, in this study, we also examine the claim that theism is more complex and unclear than naturalism. For a theist, God should not be a short answerto questions. The concept of God indeed needs explanation.However, nature also should not be a short answer to questions. As discussed in our study, while Oppy claims that naturalism is preferable to theism in defense of naturalism, he does not offer a clear and understandable answer as to why naturalism should be preferred.
