Sekülerleşme teorisi ve David Martin'in yaklaşımı

Abstract

Din sosyolojisinin en önemli konularından biri olan Sekülerleşme teorisi ve sekülerleşme konusu bugün de önemini korumaktadır. Bu çalışmada Rönesansa, Reforma ve hatta Eski Ahit?e dayandırılan sekülerleşme teorisinin bilimsel ve düşünsel arka planına yer verilmiştir. Bu manada sekülerleşme düşüncesine zemin hazırlayan kurucu sosyologlara ve onların düşüncelerine yer verilmiştir. Bu bağlamda Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim ve Max Weberin fikir ve yaklaşımları üzerinde durulmuştur. Sekülerleşme teorisinin ilk ortaya çıkışı ile birlikte bu teoriyi savunan sosyologların fikirleri bu tezin ilk bölümünde ele alınmıştır. Klasik olarak ifade edilen ilk dönem sekülerleşme teorisi savunucuları, ne kadar modernite o kadar sekülerleşme şeklindeki düşünce ile hareket etmiş ve bunun sonucu olarak sosyal hayatta dinin öneminin azalacağını ve hatta dinin ortadan kalkacağını savunmuşlardır. Tezin ilk bölümünde, klasik tezden sonra ortaya çıkan karşıt teze ve ondan sonra söz konusu olan alternatif yaklaşıma yer verilmiştir. Tezin ikinci bölümünde ise sekülerleşme teorisinin ilk ortaya atıldığı bir dönemde ilk eleştiriyi gündeme getiren ve çalışmalarında sekülerleşme konusuna ciddi bir şekilde eğilen ünlü din sosyoloğu David Martin ve onun fikirleri anlatılmıştır.

The secularization theory has been one of the most important subjects of Sociology of Religion and it is still a vital issue today. This study provides a scientific and conceptual background of the secularization theory which is traced back to the Renaissance, Reformation and even to the Old Testament. The study presents ideas of the founding fathers of sociology who prepared the ground for the secularization theory. In this respect, it emphasizes the approaches and ideas of Auguste Comte, Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim and Max Weber.The first chapter of this thesis provides a summary of the emergence of the secularization theory and the arguments that support the theory. The first proponents of the secularization theory, who acted in what is also known as the classical period, believed in a direct positive relationship between modernization and secularization. As a result, they argued that religion will lose its importance in social life and even that the religion will disappear altogether. The first chapter also presents the counter-thesis which emerged after the classical period and the alternative approach. A central aim of the study is to focus on the works of a prominent sociologist of religion, David Martin, who raised the first critique of the theory in the classical period and dedicated his life to the study of the secularization issue. The second chapter of this thesis is devoted to David Martin?s ideas and approach.
