Polypropylene (PP), the world's most widely used mass-produced thermoplastic, is also frequently used in the automotive industry. Polypropylene needs to be painted when used on parts outside the car, such as bumpers. By nature, PP has low surface energy, which results in poor bonds in coating, painting and bonding processes. For this reason, PP surfaces cleaned with isopropyl alcohol are first surface activated using various physical and chemical processes. After surface treatments, a primer is used to prepare the surface for the painting process. However, the primer material used and the priming process have disadvantages such as extra cost, being harmful to the environment and increasing the process time. In this study, the conditions required to ensure sufficient strength in parts painted without primer were investigated. Painted PP surfaces were subjected to aesthetic and performance tests determined by the automotive industry. Flame etching, which is frequently used as a surface activation method, and atmospheric pressure plasma (ABP), which is an alternative method that does not use fossil fuels, were used. In the experiments, it was seen that the parts painted without primer met the quality standards. Thus, it was understood that primerless paintability is possible and the ABP process can be an alternative for primer and primerless painting processes.
