Induction of anaesthesia with some volatile anaesthetics is associated with adverse effects in rabbits (Hedenqvist et al., 2000). Halothane, isoflurane and sevoflurane have been found to be tolerated badly in rabbits. In rabbits, investigations have shown that induction of anaesthesia with isoflurane or sevoflurane produces a breath - holding response. (Flecknell and Liles 1996, Hedenqvist et al., 2000).The present study was therefore undertaken to assess the suitability for rapid mask induction and maintenance of anaesthesia in rabbits with sevoflurane, by comparing the characteristics of induction and maintenance with isoflurane, a volatile agent that is commonly used for anaesthesia in this species.
