The use of requests by Turkish EFL learners

Abstract

This study was carried out in order to investigate whether there was any significant difference between Turkish EFL leamers’ and native speakers’ use of politeness strategies in requests. 100 EFL leamers and 20 native speakers o f English participated in the present study. In order to gather the necessary information, two questionnaires were administered. The first one was a discourse completion test in which the subjects were asked to produce their own requests in given situations. The second questionnaire was a judgment test in which the subjects were asked to rank five altemative request strategies from the least appropriate to the most by giving numbers from 1 to 5. According to the social and psychological variables, the situations in both questionnaires were divided into six categories. Based on those six categories, the data were analysed by means o f chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests. Analysis of the data showed that there was a significant difference between the two groups’ use o f request strategies. Findings revealed a significant difference for ali the six categories. What is more, results o f the data indicated that Turkish EFL leamers were able to use request strategies in a similar way to the native speakers o f English when they were asked to rank the altematives given. The results also highlighted that Turkish EFL leamers were not able to use requests in a similar way to the native speakers when they were expected to produce their own strategies. It might be wrong to generalize the findings o f this study since they are limited to the students who study at Uludağ University. That’ s why this fact should be consıdered when the findings are evaluatcd.

Bu çalışma İngilizce'yi yabancı dil olarak öğrenen Türk öğrencileri ile anadili İngilizce olan kişilerin kibar ricaları kullanımlarında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir farklılık olup olmadığını ortaya çıkarmak amacı ile yapılmıştır. Çalışmaya 100 Türk üniversite hazırlık sınıfı öğrencisi ile anadili İngilizce olan 20 kişi katılmıştır. Data iki farklı test uygulanarak elde edilmiştir. Birinci testin uygulanma amacı katılımcıların kendi kibar rica stratejilerini oluşturmalarını sağlamak, ikinci testin uygulanma amacı ise katılımcılara olası alternatifler sunulduğunda bunları uygunluk sırasına göre değerlendirmelerini sağlamaktı. Her iki testte tarif edilen on sekizer durum içerdikleri sosyal ve psikolojik faktörlere göre altı değişik kategoride toplandı. Bu kategorilere bağlı olarak her iki test de değerlendirildi. Ayrıca her iki grubun genel olarak rica stratejilerini karşılaştırmak için on sekiz durum ayrı ayrı da ele alındı. Değerlendirmelerde Mann- Whitney U test ve ki-kare testi kullanıldı. Grafik ve tablolar da sonuçlan desteklemek amacı ile kullanıldı. Data analizi adı geçen kategorilerin hepsinde iki grubun rica stratejilerini kullanmalarında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılıklar ortaya çıkardı. Aynı zamanda,data analizi İngilizce'yi yabancı dil olarak öğrenen Türk öğrencilerin verilen olası alternatif stratejileri uygunluk sırasına sokmada başarılı olduklarını fakat kendi rica stratejilerini oluşturma aşamasında aynı başarıyı sağlayamadıklarını da göstermiştir. Bu çalışmadaki bulgular Uludağ Üniversitesi'nde okuyan Türk öğrenciler ile sınırlı olduğundan, bu araştırmanın sonuçlarını genellemek yanlış olabilir. Bu yüzden, sonuçlar değerlendirilirken bu gerçek akılda tutulmalıdır.
