Item Conditioning methods for farm animals: A mini review(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2012-12-10) Varnon, Christopher A.; Martin, Abigail L.; Abramson, Charles I.This review briefly surveys the range of conditioning methods used in the study of learning for economically important farm animals. We begin by discussing the importance of conditioning methods, provide an overview of non-associative and associative learning and follow by showing how these methods are applied to chickens, cows, horses, goats and sheep. Information on general resources is also provided.Item Severe sarcoptic mange and cheyletiellosis in a New Zealland rabbit and its treatment with high dosage of ıvermectin(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2013-04-10) Kaya, Güney; Coşkunserçe, Gözde; Akdeşir, Ezgi; Coşkun, Şevki Z.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi.Severe sarcoptic mange and cheyletiellosis in a male New Zealland rabbit at 4 months of age are reported. Infection is characteristic with a mass resembling to the horn of a rhinoceros on the muzzle, crustling on pinnae and paws, gryposis, alopecia on abdomen. Sarcoptes scabiei and Cheyletiella parasitivorax were identified in skin scrapings. Ivermectin (İverkol ® Etkin) at the dose of 1.2mg kg-1 bw was injected subcutanously. The mass on the muzzle fell off on the 2nd day of treatment. The mite burden of the mass was found to be 657 S. scabiei and 2 C. parasitivorax in a volume of 5mm3 respectively. Since few live mites were observed in scapings, the treatment was repeated at the dose of 600µg kg-1 on the 7th day of treatment. There was not any live mite in the scapings on the 14th day post treatment. However, alopecia especially on the muzzle and gryposis were still persistent, and, a third application of the drug at the dose of 600µg kg-1 was performed. The rabbit was kept in a wire cage for 5 months and examined with 10 days of intervals. Any side effect of the drug was not observed. The rabbit clinically improved except alopecia on the muzzleItem Simultaneous detection of six different groups of antimicrobial drugs in milk, meat, urine, and feed matrices(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2013-01-29) Rumbeiha, Wilson K.; Ensley, Steve; Schrunk, Dwayne E.; Oruç, Hasan H.; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi/Farmakoloji ve Toksikoloji Bölümü.Antimicrobials are widely used for animal health in food-producing animals. Therefore, antimicrobial residues are of food safety concern. Simultaneous detection of different antimicrobial residues in the same matrice is important. Therefore, the objective of this study was to detect six different group antimicrobials in milk, meat, urine, and feed matrices under experimental conditions, and to evaluate its use for routine analysis. Biochip array-based immunoassay is currently used for simultaneous detection and quantitation of different groups of six antimicrobials in milk, urine, meat, honey, and feed. Results showed that of the six target drugs, norfloxacin, ceftiofur, florfenicol, streptomycin, tylosin and tetracycline could be detected in milk, meat, urine, and in feed matrices. In conclusion, this assay can effectively detect all target antibacterials from different groups in milk, meat, urine, and feed matrices, and this assay can be used for routine detection of these antibacterial residues in the stated matrices.Item The use of dogs in defense and security management in Turkey(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2013-04-19) Begeç, SuatThe terrorism gained a new dimension after the terrorist attack on 11 September, 2001 and became unlimited like globalization. It is seen that today most of the wars are being made in urban areas or under the framework of UN for the purpose of “peace making” and “peace keeping”. But the Fight In Built Up Areas / Military Operations on Urbanized Terrain (FIBUA/MOUT) always brings together different requirements such as a different doctrine, tactic, technique, procedure, planning, training and equipment. As it is known, because of their having learned the cage life, their getting used to live with humans and their properties suitable for duties, the dogs have been one of the closest friends of human beings. These characteristics make the dogs superior to other animals, and make them advantageous for the mission in defense and security management, rural and urban areas, and mission against terrorism. It is required to know these cute and friendly animals and know how to benefit from them. This article focuses on possibility and capability of use of dogs in defense and security management in Turkey examples.
