Item Effect of glass wool filtration method on frozen-thawed dog semen(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2004-03-16) Günay, Ülgen; Nur, Zekariye; Soylu, M. Kemal; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the glass wool filtration on motility and morphology of post-thaw quality of dog semen Two German Shepherd Dogs were used as material. Ejaculates were diluted with Tris-citric acid-egg yolk and Sodium citrate-egg yolk extenders at 1:1 ratio including a final 4% glycerol concentration. Semen were frozen in 0.5 ml straws and thawed in a water bath at 37º C for 30 sec. Pasteur pipettes were used as columns. Each column was constructed with 20, 40 and 80 mg glass wool and at 2, 3 and 4 cm heights, respectively. Filtrates were examined before and after filtration for motility, acrosomal, other and total defects. When the filtration methods were compared, the highest improvement percentage in motility was found in column filled with 40 mg glass wool. On the other hand extenders did not have any effect on motility and other morphological defects. But significantly interactions were found between spermatological parameters and filtration techniques. In conclusion, glass wool filtration techniques could be used successfully for filtration of frozen-thawed dog semen.Item Findings of focal adenomyosis in a case of ınguinal hysterocele accompanied with mammary tumour in a bitch(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2004-10-07) Nak, Yavuz; Mısırlıoğlu, Deniz; Nak, Deniz; Tuna, Bilginer; Kumru, İsmail Hakkı; Alasonyalılar, Aylin; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veteriner Fakültesi. In this report, inguinal hysterocele and focal adenomyosis is described in a six years old Terrier bitch, with the recognition of a mammary tumour. During the course of mammary tumour removal, a concurrent inguinal hysterocele was observed. In the uterine wall sphere-shaped, firm tissues and cystic formations were determined. Histopathologically, mammary tumour type was considered as schirrhous adenocarcinoma. Firm tissues and cystic formations in the uterine wall were considered as focal adenomyosis. Information about the history, clinical, laboratory and pathological findings were given.Item Levels of zinc, copper and magnesium in sheep with toxoplasmosis(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2004-05-31) Seyrek, Kamil; Paşa, Serdar; Kıral, Funda; Bildik, Ayşegül; Babür, Cahit; Kılıç, SelçukThe aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of Toxoplasma gondii infection on the content of essential elements of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and magnesium (Mg) in sheep. Serum Zn, Cu, and Mg levels as well as wool Zn and Cu concentrations were measured in twenty sheep whose anti-T gondii antibodies were positive and in seventeen sero-negative healthy sheep. The average Zn concentration in serums from sero-positive sheep was significantly (P<0.05) lower than in their controls. However, compared to the healthy ewes the Cu concentrations in serum of sero-positive objects were recorded significantly (P<0.001) higher. The mean concentration of Mg in serum was higher but not significant (P>0.05) in sero-positive sheep than in their controls. On the other hand, the Zn and Cu concentrations of wool from diseased animals showed no significant elevations.Item A morphometric study on the uropygial gland of the male and female chicks given diets containing red hot pepper(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2005-03-08) Serbest, Ayşe; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Veterinerlik Fakültesi. In this study, the effect of feeding with diet containing red hot pepper on the uropygial gland was investigated comparatively and quantitatively. For this reason, 100 male and 100 female chicks were divided into two equal groups as the control and experimental that each contained 50 chicks. The animals in control groups were fed with normal chicken diet and the animals in experimental groups were fed with the same diet, that containing 1% red hot pepper (10g for 1kg feed). The study was began with new born chicks and was continued for 5 months and, the findings were obtained monthly. The values related to the uropygial gland were found to be greater in males than females in both control and experimental groups in all months. The noticeable finding is that the all parameters in control and experimental groups were different statistically between male and female chicks in 4th month and 4th and 5th months, respectively. As a result of the study, it was found that the effect of feeding diet containing red hot pepper in non-toxic dose on the morphometry of the uropygial gland was greater in males compared to females.Item Prediction of albumen weight, yolk weight, and shell weight as egg weight in Japanese quail egg(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2005-03-11) Şeker, İbrahimThis study was conducted to determine the most adequate models for defining the correlation between the egg weight and the albumen, yolk and shell weights as well as pointing out the practicability options for determining the egg weight as an estimator of the egg shell, egg yolk and the egg albumen weights in the quail eggs. In this experiment, a total of 175 eggs were collected in 3 consecutive days from 72 female quails, aged 20 weeks. The birds were housed as 1 male/3 female per cage of 40x30x30 cm at Quail Research unit of the Department of Zootechnia, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and Firat University. The highest phenotypic correlation was determined between egg weight and albumen weight (0.94). The least phenotypic correlation was determined between egg weight and shell weight (0.61). Coefficients of determinations (R2 ) indicated that quadratic, logistic and exponential models showed the better fit to explain the relationship between the egg weight and the albumen weight respectively. On the other hand, the best models used in defining of the correlation between the egg weight and the yolk weight are quadratic, linear, logistic, and exponential models. As for the relationship between the egg weight and the shell weight; quadratic, linear, logistic, and exponential models were mostly accurate. As a result of the research, it was determined that it was possible to use the egg weight as the estimator of the albumen and the yolk weights by using a suitable model, however, it was not fully possible for the determination of the shell weightItem Serum sialic acid, total protein and albumin levels in cows with metritis treated with intrauterine oxytetracycline(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2004-11-03) Musal, Bayazıt; Seyrek, Kamil; Ulutaş, Pınar A.Serum total sialic acid, total protein and albumin concentrations in healthy cows and cows with metritis treated with local intrauterine therapy were measured. Twenty multiparous cows with metritis from a dairy herd were treated with a daily dose of 25 ml intrauterine injectable oxytetracycline solution (100 mg/ml) for three consecutive days. A significant reduction (p<0.001) of vaginal discharge following therapy were observed while this reduction could not be corraleted with mean serum sialic acid concentrations which were measured as 896 µg/ml in healthy cows and 1063,19 µg/ml before and 1053,40 µg/ml following the treatment. No difference were observed in serum total protein and albumin concentrations of healthy and sick cows.Item Some fattening and slaughter characteristics of holsteın young bulls in ıntensive conditions(Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2004-10-01) Koçak, Ömür; Ekiz, Bülent; Yılmaz, Alper; Güneş, HalilThis study was carried out to investigate the effects of beginning to fattening weight and season on some fattening traits, and some slaughter characteristics of Holstein young bulls in intensive conditions. The 1661 Holstein young bulls used in the study were grouped according to their beginning to fattening weights (176-225 kg, 226-275 kg, 276-325 kg and 326-400 kg) and the season in which the fattening began. The effects of the factors investigated were determined by the use of general linear model (GLM) procedure in SPSS program package. In the study, the groups having lower beginning to fattening weights gained higher live weights during the 210 days of fattening. As a result of the seasonal temperatures, the fattening performances of the Holstein young bulls were the lowest in summer, while being the highest in autumn. The dressing percentage of Holstein young bulls was 57.8% and the effect of slaughter weight was not significant on dressing percentage.
