Epistemik bağımlılık ve failliğin yitimi: Linda T. Zagzebski’nin epistemik otorite kuramına yönelik bir eleştiri

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, Linda T. Zagzebski’nin epistemik otorite ve otoriteye güven kuramı eleştirel bir perspektiften ele alınmıştır. Zagzebski'nin kuramı, uzmanlık bilgisine sahip otoritelerin tanıklığına güvenilir bilgi kaynağı olarak dayanmanın rasyonel olduğunu ileri sürer. Ancak bu çalışmada Zagzebski’nin önerdiği türden bir dayanmanın epistemik bağımlılığa yol açabileceği ve bunun bireylerin düşünsel özerkliğini ve eleştirel akıl yürütme yetilerini zayıflatabileceği iddia edilmektedir. Tanıklığın bilgi edinme sürecindeki katkısının göz ardı edilemez olduğu kabul edilmekle birlikte uzman tanıklığına aşırı derecede güvenmenin bireysel epistemik özerkliği ve rasyonelliği tehdit edebileceği ileri sürülmektedir. Bununla birlikte, uzmanlara duyulan aşırı güvenin sonuçları etik ve politik açılardan da incelenmiş, bu tür güven ilişkilerinin asimetrik güç ilişkileri doğurabileceği ve epistemik sömürüye zemin hazırlayabileceği öne sürülmüştür. Çalışmada tanıklığa güven ile eleştirel düşünme ve yargıda bulunma yetisinin işletilmesi arasında bir denge kurulması gerekliliği vurgulanmış, güven, inanç ve bilgi gibi olguların toplumsal bağlamlardan soyut bir biçimde ele alınması durumunda bireylerin otoriteden gelen bilginin edilgen alıcıları hâline dönüşmeleri tehlikesine dikkat çekilmiştir. This study offers a critical engagement with Linda T. Zagzebski’s account of epistemic authority and the dynamics of trust in authority. Zagzebski argues that it is rational to acknowledge the testimony of authorities endowed with epistemic expertise as a reliable source of knowledge. However, this study contends that such reliance, as envisioned by Zagzebski, risks engendering a form of epistemic dependence that may erode intellectual autonomy and diminish an individual’s capacity for critical rational deliberation. Although the indispensability of testimony in the processes of knowledge acquisition cannot be denied, this analysis emphasizes that excessive deference to expert testimony may compromise the conditions of epistemic self-determination and weaken the exercise of rational agency. Beyond its epistemological implications, the study interrogates the ethical and political ramifications of disproportionate trust in experts, suggesting that such trust may consolidate asymmetrical power relations and constitute fertile ground for epistemic exploitation. The investigation underscores the necessity of cultivating a delicate balance between reliance on testimony and the active exercise of critical reflection and judgment. It further cautions that if categories such as trust, belief, and knowledge are abstracted from their social and intersubjective contexts, individuals may be reduced to passive recipients of authoritative discourse, thereby forfeiting their role as critically engaged epistemic agents. Finally, the study situates the potential degeneration of epistemic trust into epistemic exploitation within the framework of Michel Foucault’s analysis of the entanglement between knowledge, power, and authority, thereby illuminating the ways in which relations of epistemic dependence may be implicated in broader structures of domination and subjectivation.
