Abstract
The basic aim of the therapy of Osteoartlıritis (OA) of the knee is to relieve pain. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), Electroacupuncture (EAP), Ice massage mediated by similar neural mechanisms, may be used for relieving pain. The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of TENS, EAP and ice massage. Patients (n = 95) suffering from OA of the knee were treated with these modalities. The parameters for evaluating the effectiveness were pain (in rest, in weight bearing, with walking, in raising from chair, in ascending stairs, silting down on a chair) stiffness in rest, quadriceps muscle stregth 50 foot walking time, active flexion degree. The results showed that all three nıetlıods could be effective in decreasing not only pain symptoms but also all of the other parameters in a short period of time.
