Abstract
Daily urinary exeretion of total catecholamines were measured in 18 subjects with physiologically complete spinal cord transections at the various level of the sympathetic out flow. Mean total exeretion of catecholamines in urine was found. 24.9 ± 3.2 ug/lt (mean ± SEM), within normal ranges (20-40 ug/lt). The amounts of catecholamine were greatly varied patient to patient. There was, however, very high correlation (r = 0.90, p < 0.001) between the amount of catecholamines were found in urine in two successive measurements in same individual subject in period of one week. The results can suggest that the spinal cord transected patients seem able to maintain certain level of basal sympathetic activity in chronic phase of the spinal injury.
