Abstract
In our study, we aimed to investigate the demographic characteristics of patients with eye emergencies. Also the necessity of the referral to a tertiary hospital is evaluated.2378 patients were included in the study. The demographic characteristics of the patients, complaints, referral or direct arrival status, having previously diagnosed eye disease, having trauma factor related, the current diagnosis, the diagnosis in the emergency department, radiological tests, consultations and the final status of the patients(admission or discharge) were evaluated. In our study, 2.6% of the patients were admitted as eye emergencies and the majority was (72.8%) between 21 and 50 years of age.87.8% of the patients were direct emergency service admissions and 95.3% of them had no previously diagnosed eye disease. %85.9 of the patients had complaints limited one eye and trauma ratio was 71.2%.The most common eye complaint was (64.4%) burning in the eyes. Only the 6.7% of the patients had additional radiological tests and 85.1% of them were consulted. 52.8% of the patients were diagnosed as corneal and out of corneal foreign body. In conclusion; diseases that are not needed to be evaluated in terms of eye surgery can be discharged from emergency service by appropriate education and supplementary hardware such as biomicroscope and tonometry.
