Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop and examine the effectiveness of the "Thank You" Gratitude Education Program (TYGEP) which aims to help elementary school teachers to develop their skills to recognize and express gratitude, increase their gratitude levels, and review the school-based activities they can do to make gratitude a part of their "school culture." A three measurements (pre-test, post-test and follow up) experimental design with one treatment an one none- treatment control group was used to examine the effectiveness of the program, with a sample of 23 teachers (N= 11 for the experimental group, 8 females - 3 males; N= 12 for the control group, 7 females- 5 males). The experimental group received the 7,5 hours - 5 week TYGEP (each session was 90 minutes), while the control group received no treatment during that time. All statistical analyses was carried out by using SPSS for Windows 22.0. The data were analyzed by Mann Whitney U Test and Wilcoxon Ranked Orders Tests. Results of a series of Mann Whitney U Tests revealed that the TYGEP was effective in increasing total gratitude scores of the experimental group members both in post test and in follow-up measures, compared to the control group members scores. The program was also effective in increasing Lack of Sense of Deprivation (LOSD) and Appreciation of Others (AO) scores of the experimental group at post test, and AO scores at follow-up test, compared to the control group. Results of the Wilcoxon Ranked orders tests indicated that the TYGEP was effective in increasing the total gratitude scores of the experimental group members between pre-test and post-test, and between pre-test and follow- up. Inregard to all three gratitude subscores, from pre-test to post-test, TYGEP was also found effective to increase gratitude in experimental group. However, no significant difference was found between the pre-test and follow-up LOSD subscale scores forthe experimental group. Results also indicated significant differences for the control group members. A significant increase appeared in the AO scores of the control group members between post test and follow up measures. Finally the qualitative data obtained by the use of the " Thank You Gratitude Education Program Evaluation Form" revealed that all the primary education teachers who participated the study found the program highly effective and they were very happy to join the study.
