Abstract
In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between the gratitude and emotional intelligence levels of private high school students. In literature, studies and measurement tools to measure these two concepts are focused mostly on adults and young adults. Therefore, firstly the validity and reliability evidence of the scales to measure these two concepts among high school student were examined. For this reason, validity and reliability evidence for three scales, the Gratitude, Resentment and Appreciation Test – Short form (S-GRAT), the Gratitude Questionnaire (GQ) and the Bar On Emotional Quotient Inventory Youth Version (Bar On EQ–i: YV) were analyzed in the study. Secondly, the students' gratitude and emotional intelligence levels and the relationship between these terms were investigated. Finally, gender and grade level effects on both of these variables were examined. Data were collected from 249 students who were attending a private school in Bursa, and whose ages ranged from14 to18 (=15.41 and SD=1.24; 50,60% female, 49,40% male). To examine the construct validity of each of the three scales, exploratory factor analysis were run. To assess the reliabilities of the scales, Cronbach's alpha internal consistency coefficients, split half coefficients and correlation coefficients between the test re-test scores were calculated. Results indicated that these scales are valid and reliable tools to assess the gratitude and emotional intelligence levels of high school students. Additionally, in the study, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation coefficients were calculated to assess the relationship between the gratitude and emotional intelligence scores, and findings revealed a moderate significant relationship between gratitude and emotional intelligence levels. Finally, according to the results of the MANOVA that was run to assess gender and grade level effects on gratitude and emotional intelligence total scores, it was noted that gender has a significant effect (p<.05) on students' gratitude levels out of the analysis of the GQ scores, whereas it has no significant effect on students' gratitude levels out of the analysis of the S-GRAT scores.
