Abstract
It seems that Ibn Bajjah’s Fi al-mutaharrik is a risalah written in the last years of his life. The risalah contains several references to the author’s famous books Tadbir al-mutavahhid, Risalah al-vada and Kitab al-Nafs. In this risalah, Ibn Bajjah studies the idea of movement in man based on the argument about first mover of Aristotel’s Physica. According to him, the basic characteristic of human movement is free will depending on choosing; it is only because of “willing actions” that moral and juridical responsibility can be asked for. Free will based on “choice” is rooted in human reason and thinking only. It is only by this distinct character that human beings can comprehand the “good” nat only in phenomenal but in numenal context.
