Abstract
This study attempted to determine the academic characteristics of academically successful eighth-grade students in terms of themselves, their families, and their teachers. The study was conducted in a state middle school in the Izmit district of Kocaeli province with three students with high academic success at the eighth-grade level, one parent of each student, and four subject teachers. The study participants were determined using the criterion sampling method, which is one of the purposeful sampling methods. The study is a case study, one of the qualitative research methods. The “holistic single case design” was used as one of the case study designs. Data were obtained through semi-structured interview forms. The obtained data were subjected to qualitative content analysis and descriptive analysis. The students in the research group stated that the most important characteristic that students with high academic success should have is “diligence” and characteristics such as “being disciplined, organized, working on time, and focusing”. In addition, the students stated that non-academic activities such as “sports and music” support academic success. According to the parents, the most important characteristics that successful students should have are “planned work, not wasting time, doing their homework, and adhering to a study schedule”. According to teachers' opinions; their participation in lessons and other activities is higher than other students and features such as "readiness, interest in the lesson, desire to learn" are stated. It was seen that common academic characteristics in student, parent, and teacher statements are being determined, setting goals, and working in a planned manner.
