Sokrates temsillerinden Platon’un Sokrates’ine: Sokrates’in savunması ve batı siyaset felsefesinin kuruluşu

Abstract

Sokrates, felsefe tarihinin en tartışmalı figürlerinden biridir. Sokrates’in felsefesini yazılı bir biçimde geliştirmemiş olması bu tartışmanın en büyük nedenlerinden biri olarak görülmüş ve literatürde bunun yarattığı temsil problemi “Sokrates sorunu” olarak adlandırılmıştır. Sokrates sorunu, tarihsel bir kişi olarak Sokrates’in hakikati üzerine bir kuşkudur ve filozof Sokrates’e kendi yazılı metinlerinden değil ancak onun hakkındaki bazı temsiller aracılığıyla ulaşabileceğimizi ifade eder. Bu durumda Sokrates’in düşüncelerini anlamanın ilk yolu bu temsilleri incelemekten geçer. Literatürde öne çıkan klasik Sokrates temsilleri Aristophanes, Ksenophon ve Platon tarafından üretilmiştir. Aristophanes, Bulutlar komedyasında Sokrates’i doğa ve insan meseleleriyle ilgilenen tehlikeli bir entelektüel olarak resmeder. Ksenophon’un Sokrates’ten Anılar’daki Sokrates temsili, ahlâki bir bilgedir. Platon ise bilinen filozof Sokrates’in ayrıntılı bir portresini ortaya koyar. Bu yazı, Sokrates temsillerini inceledikten sonra, Platoncu metinler arasında Sokrates’in en canlı biçimde tasvir edildiği Sokrates’in Savunması’nı çözümlemeyi amaçlıyor. Bunu yaparken Sokrates’in yargılanması ve ölüme mahkûm edilmesinin nedenlerini felsefî açıdan analiz ediyor. Buna göre, Sokrates’e yönelik politik suçlamaların yan sıra, felsefi açıdan bakıldığında en etkili olan neden, Sokrates’in yarattığı düşünsel dönüşümün varolan Atina polis’i ile çatışmasıdır. Platon’un Sokrates’i ruh, erdem, hakikat ve ölüm gibi kavramlara getirdiği yenilikçi yorumla diğer temsillerden farklılaşan bir “filozof” portresi geliştirir. Sokrates, bu kavramlara “felsefe”nin dönüşümcü aşısını yaptıkça krizdeki Atina polis’inin düzenini bozan tehlikeli bir figür olarak görülmüştür. Dolayısıyla yargılamanın felsefi arka planı, özellikle ruh, erdem ve hakikat kavramlarının yeni bir toplumsal tip olarak filozof tarafından öne sürülmesi açısından incelenmelidir.

Socrates is one of the most controversial figures in the history of philosophy. The fact that Socrates did not develop his philosophy in a written form has been seen as one of the biggest reasons for this debate, and the problem of representation caused by this has been called the “Socratic problem” in the literature. The Socratic problem is a scepticism about the truth of Socrates as a historical person and states that we can only reach thephilosopher Socrates through some representations about him, not through his own written texts. In this case, thefirst way to understand Socrates’ thoughts is to analyse these representations. The most prominent classicalrepresentations of Socrates in the literature are produced by Aristophanes, Xenophon and Plato. In his comedy Clouds, Aristophanes portrays Socrates as a dangerous intellectual who is concerned with nature and humanaffairs. Xenophon's representation of Socrates in the Memorabilia is a moral sage. Plato, on the other hand,provides a detailed portrait of the well-known philosopher Socrates. After analysing the representations of Socrates, this article aims to analyse the Apology of Socrates, the most vivid portrayal of Socrates among the Platonic texts. In doing so, the article philosophically analyses the reasons for Socrates’ trial and condemnation todeath. Accordingly, besides the political accusations against Socrates, the most influential reason from aphilosophical point of view is the conflict between the intellectual transformation created by Socrates and theexisting Athenian polis. Plato's Socrates develops a portrait of a “philosopher” that differs from otherrepresentations with his innovative interpretation of concepts such as soul, virtue, truth and death. Socrates wasseen as a dangerous figure who disrupted the order of the Athenian polis in crisis as he infuses these conceptswith the transformative “philosophy.” Therefore, the philosophical background of the trial should be analysed,especially in terms of the assertion of the concepts of “soul”, “virtue” and “truth” by the philosopher as a newsocial type.
