Publication Determination of energy resolution for a Nai(Tl) detector modeled with FLUKA code(Korean Nuclear Soc, 2021-11-01) Demir, Nilgün; Kuluöztürk, Zehra Nur; DEMİR, NİLGÜN; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi/Fizik Bölümü; 0000-0003-2245-8461; AAH-3156-2021In this study, 3 '' x 3 '' NaI(Tl) detector, which is widely used in gamma spectroscopy, was modeled with FLUKA code, and calculations required to determine the detector's energy resolution were reported. Photon beams with isotropic distribution with 59, 81, 302, 356, 511, 662, 835, 1173, 1275, and 1332 keV energy were used as radiation sources. The photon pulse height distribution of the NaI(Tl) without influence of its energy resolution obtained with FLUKA code has been converted into a real NaI(Tl) response function, using the necessary conversion process. The photon pulse height distribution simulated in the conversion process was analyzed using the ROOT data analysis framework. The statistical errors of the simulated data were found in the range of 0.2-1.1%. When the results, obtained with FLUKA and ROOT, are compared with the literature data, it is seen that the results are in good agreement with them. Thus, the applicability of this procedure has been demonstrated for the other energy values mentioned.Publication Calculation of gamma shielding properties for glass ceramics using FLUKA(Pleiades Publishing Inc, 2021-11-01) Nura, Kuluöztürk Zehra; Demir, Nilgün; Dal, Murat; DEMİR, NİLGÜN; 0000-0003-2245-8461; AAH-3156-2021; JQV-7579-2023In this paper, gamma radiation shielding properties of same glass ceramics are reported for 356, 662, 1173, and 1330 keV gamma energies. Firstly, the validity of the FLUKA method was determined using the (90-x)TeO2-xMoO(3)-10ZnO glass system whose shielding parameters were determined by different analytical methods in the literature. The mass attenuation coefficients (mu(m)), half-value layer, and mean free path parameters for the glass ceramic samples were calculated by the FLUKA. When the results obtained with the FLUKA and XCOM database were examined, it was found that glass f6, which is one of the PbO-Al2O3-SiO2-TiO2 glass-ceramic samples, had the highest gamma shielding property among the glass ceramics. Additionally, comparisons show that the FLUKA code is an alternative method to analytical methods for determining gamma shielding parameters and it is a tool that can provide preliminary information and comparisons for experimental studies.Publication Investigation of energy deposition and dose distributions on collimator under photon beam(Polish Acad Sciences Inst Physics, 2015-08-01) Kuluöztürk, Z. N.; Akkurt, I.; Demir, N.; DEMİR, NİLGÜN; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Fen Edebiyat Fakültesi; 0000-0003-2245-8461; AAH-3156-2021The bremsstrahlung photon facility where photon beam can be created via bremsstrahlung processes has been installed in many different accelerator in the world. TARLA (Turkish Accelerator and Radiation Laboratory at Ankara) will be first facility of TAC (Turkish Accelerator Center) project in Turkey. An optimal design of collimator is important for obtain a clean high energy photon beam in a bremsstrahlung facility. In this study the photon spectrum has been obtained depending on the entrance angle of the collimator. The energy deposition and dose distributions on the collimator by photon beam generated from 30 MeV energy electron beam have been calculated with FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation code.Publication Fluka monte carlo calculations for angular distribution of bremsstrahlung photons from thin targets(Elsevier, 2019-03-15) Demir, Nilgün; Kuluözturk, Zehra Nur; Akkurt, İskender; DEMİR, NİLGÜN; Uludağ Üniversitesi/Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi/Fizik Bölümü; 0000-0003-2245-8461; AAH-3156-2021This study reports calculations of the angular distributions for the bremsstrahlung photons emitted from different targets using the FLUKA Monte Carlo code. For electron beams with 20 and 40 MeV energies, photon fluences dependent on scattering angles of photons obtained from the thin Au, W, Gd, Ag, Mo, Nb, Cu, Fe, Si, Al targets with optimum thicknesses (2 mu m - 100 mu m) were considered. At the same time, optimum thicknesses of the targets with low to high Z number were calculated by taking the radiation lengths of the targets into consideration. The changes in photon fluence connected to the scattering angle and atomic number of the bremsstrahlung photons obtained from the targets with optimum thickness were investigated. The results of this study will be benefit for medical physics applications and accelerator facilities that require knowledge of angular distributions of photons for accurate fluence calculations with Monte Carlo based methods.Publication Barium-lead-borosilicate glass containing lanthanum oxide: Fabrication, physical properties, and photon shielding characteristics(Springer Heidelberg, 2022-02-01) Kuluöztürk, Zehra Nur; Kurtuluş, Recep; Kavas, Taner; Demir, Nilgün; DEMİR, NİLGÜN; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Fen Edebiyat Fakültesi/Psikoloji Bölümü.; 0000-0003-1070-8451; AAH-3156-2021In our work, we studied the impact of lanthanum oxide (La2O3) on barium-lead-borosilicate (BLBS) glass systems in terms of physical properties and photon shielding characteristics. With this motivation, we aimed at synthesizing a BLBS glass system with a composition of 6Na(2)O-0.8MgO-0.25Al(2)O(3)-(55-y)SiO2-11B(2)O(3)-7.3CaO-13BaO-0.83SrO-5.75PbO-yLa(2)O(3), (y: 0, 5, 10, and 20 wt%), via traditional melting techniques. The fabricated glass samples, La-0 to La-20, were analyzed using some characterization techniques, including Archimedes' principle and spectroscopic gamma-rays experiment. According to the measurements, one can observe that all glass series show a transparent appearance irrespective of varying La2O3 content. On the other hand, the increasing La2O3 insertion ratio has a favorable influence on glass density (rho(glass)). That is, rho(glass) increases from 2.9419 to 3.3479 g.cm(-3) in subjection to the amount of La2O3 from 0 to 20 wt%. Similarly, molar volumes (V-m) for the La-series are found to be in an inclining behavior, namely, from 23.52 to 25.46 cm(3) mol(-1). With regards to the gamma-rays (356, 511, 661.7, 1173, 1275, and 1332 keV) attenuation characteristics, the linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) values obtained for the lowest energy by experimental and simulation methods for La-0 to La-20 samples were found in the range from 0.3298 to 0.4175 cm(-1) and 0.3349 to 0.3992 cm(-1), respectively. Similarly, the LAC for all energies increased as the La2O3 additive ratio increased; that is, the La-20 sample had the highest protection ability. In addition, we found out a good agreement among the FLUKA, XCOM, and experiments. Lastly, the LAC values of La2O3 added glass samples were compared with some concrete used for shielding, commercially available protection glasses, and some recent studies in the literature. The results showed that our glass samples, especially the La-20 glass sample, can be used as a potential candidate for photon shielding applications.
