The effect of play-based math activities on different areas of development in children 48 to 60 months of age
(Sage Publications, 2020-04-01) Birgül, Arzu Ergişi; Derman, Meral Taner; TANER DERMAN, MERAL; Zeteroğlu, Elvan Şahin; ŞAHİN ZETEROĞLU, ELVAN; Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi/Eğitim Fakültesi; AAI-3319-2021; AAI-2172-2021
There are previous studies in the literature conducted on the effect of play-based math activities on the mathematical skills, language, and cognitive development of preschool children. However, the number of studies conducted to determine the effect of play-based math activities on different areas of development in preschool children was too few. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of play-based math activities on different developmental areas (personal-social, fine motor, language, and gross motor development) of children 48 to 60 months of age. The pretest/posttest quasi-experimental research design with control and experimental groups was employed in this study. The research group of this study is composed of 45 children 22 of whom (10 girls and 12 boys) were in the experimental group and 23 (10 girls and 13 boys) in the control group. Denver II Developmental Screening Test was used as the data collection tool. As a result, it was determined that there was a significant difference between the subscales and pretest-posttest total scores concerning personal-social, fine motor, and language areas in the experimental group, while there was no statistically significant difference in the gross motor subscale. In addition, it was observed that there was statistically no significant difference between pretest-posttest scores concerning personal-social, fine motor, language, gross motor subscales and total scores of the control group. The result revealed that play-based math activities have a positive effect on personal-social, fine motor, language, and gross motor developments of children. Further studies can be planned to investigate the effects of play-based mathematics education integrated with different activities where children can have fun and be physically active on children's developmental areas.

(İçel Konferansları, 2016-01-01) Zeteroğlu, Elvan Şahin; Titrek, O; Potmesil, M; Vojtech, R; Güneş, DZ; Ekşioğlu, S; Gültekin, GS; ŞAHİN ZETEROĞLU, ELVAN; Uludağ Üniversitesi; Titrek, O; Potmesil, M; Vojtech, R; Gunes, DZ; Eksioglu, S; Gultekin, GS; AAI-3319-2021
The purpose of this study is to determine the attitudes of preschool teacher candidates towards the teaching profession. Teaching is a very special profession. Not only a person who will choose teaching as a profession should really have a great desire for it, s/he should also have the required personal qualities appropriate for the profession. This is a profession that is very demanding, but rewarding at the same time, requires great responsibilities, is open to innovations, is informed of the developmental features that knows and understands children, values spirituality rather than materiality, requires to have good communication skills; in short, it is a profession that requires its candidates to have many professional as well as personal characteristics. One wonders if the teacher candidates who will acquire this profession requiring many crucially important qualities really possess all these qualities. What do those teacher candidates think which qualities are needed to become a teacher? In this study, it was aimed to determine the attitudes of teacher candidates who chose to study at this department towards the teaching profession and examined whether the education they received at the university made a difference on their opinions and views about the teaching profession. The population of the research was comprised of the teacher candidates studying at the preschool departments of universities and the sample of the study was composed of a total of 173 teacher candidates 106 whom were first year and 67 final year (fourth year) students studying at the preschool department of Uludag University. For this purpose, first and final year teachers candidates were asked questions prepared by the researcher. Firstly percentage and frequency calculations were made on the data obtained from the study and then interpretations and evaluations were carried out. In this study, the qualities required in a preschool teacher in order of importance were determined as; "love of children", "possessing the professional personality characteristics", "being active and full of energy", "possessing positive personality characteristics", and "love of the profession".

The aim of this research is to examine the views and metaphorical perceptions of the pre-school teachers about the philosophy of children for preschool teachers. The study group of the research was composed of one hundred and thirty teacher candidates in total who are sixty-five first grade students and sixty-five fourth grade students in Uludag University Faculty of Education, Pre-school Teaching Department in the 2017 - 2018 academic year. This study is a mixed study in which qualitative and quantitative approaches are used together. In the study, looking at the metaphors that teacher candidates bring out, philosophy has mostly been stated as a source of chaos. It is referred that philosophy, which is mostly stated as a source of chaos, is also seen as a source of abstract thinking, a source of unhappiness, and a source of epistemology. Teacher candidates have often stated that philosophy has developed the ability for thinking and questioning, but, can be applied to children by adapting the philosophy to their developmental levels. It has been stated that most of the teacher candidates are not interested in philosophy but can participate if a seminar on philosophy is organized for children.
