    Anomalous insertion of abductor pollicus longus: Case report

    Colonic actinomycosis: Report of a case and review of the literature

    Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare entity which presents some difficulty in establishing a correct preoperative diagnosis. We report herein the case of a 41-year-old woman who developed abdominal actinomycosis involving the left colon and the surrounding retroperitoneum. The patient, who had an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) in situ, presented with left bank pain and the signs and symptoms of an intraabdominal mass, which was initially diagnosed as a neoplasm originating from the left colon or the retroperitoneal space. Thus, a left colectomy was performed, but the histopathological diagnosis revealed abdominal actinomycosis. We evaluated the diagnosis and treatment of this disease in light of the knowledge acquired from the available literature on this rare entity.

    Fetal methemoglobinemia: A cause of nonimmune hydrops fetalis

    A case of nonimmune hydrops fetalis resulting from fetal methemoglobinemia is presented. A woman with a pregnancy at 17 weeks' gestation was admitted after combustion gas intoxication. Although the mother totally recovered, the fetus showed signs of nonimmune hydrops fetalis at follow-up. Fetal methemoglobin levels were very high.

    Leiomyosarcoma of right iliac ertery: A case report

    A case of arterial leiomyosarcoma, which is encountered rarely, is presented. The case was a sixty-year-old woman. She was admitted with abdominal pain. A tumoral mass of 4 x 4 x 6 cm was determined on the right common iliac artery, by clinical and radiologic examination. The mass was excised along with the bifurcation of the iliac artery. The arterial continuity was provided by interpositioning a vascular graft. At the pathologic investigation, the mass was diagnosed as vascular leiomyosarcoma.

    Phakic posterior chamber intraocular lenses for the correction of high myopia

    BACKGROUND: This article evaluates the benefits and risks of silicone intraocular lenses (IOLs) implanted just anterior to the surface of the crystalline lens. METHODS: In this pilot study, 8 silicone IOLs were implanted into the posterior chambers of 8 phakic, myopic eyes (-8.00 to - 20.00 diopters [D]) under local anesthesia through a 6-mm corneal incision. RESULTS: Five of the eyes (62.5%) had a spherical equivalent refraction within ± 1.00 D and all were within ± 1.50 D of the attempted correction. The spectacle-corrected visual acuities were improved postoperatively in all eyes. Anterior chamber depths were decreased with a mean depth of 0.288 mm. Slight decentrations were observed in three eyes without any optical problems. CONCLUSION: Phakic posterior chamber lenses are a promising intervention in highly myopic patients, especially in anisometropia. Further study is needed to prove the reliability of this technique.
