Publication The birth of modernity: The influence of the Renaissance, the enlightenment and the French Revolution(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2023-12-19) Çolak, Zeynep; Mumcu, YaseminWhile the emergence and global spread of modernity is a complex phenomenon, it is known that certain political, economic, and social developments led to its rise and spread. Looking closely at these factors, it is possible to say that the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, and capitalism in the Western world are the five main historical developments that shaped modernity. On a historical continuum, these developments are interrelated. Some of them gave modernity its soul. Others made it much more influential and global. In this regard, it is arguable that the first three developments gave modernity its soul, while the last two gave it a much more effective scope. This study examines the first three historical developments using the descriptive research method based on these premises. It considers the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the French Revolution as the developments that gave birth to modernity and gave it its soul. At the same time, this study argues that these are moments or developments that are intrinsically supportive of each other, seeing these historical moments as moments of rupture and crisis in the Western world. These moments and developments are crucial components of the problems and phenomena we currently discuss today. No literary, aesthetic, philosophical, or political criticism of the 20th century can be analyzed without taking these developments into account. In this respect, this study reconsiders, within a historical continuum, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the French Revolution, which shaped modernity and its philosophy, modernism.Publication Children after earthquake: Maraş Earthquake in Türkiye.(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2023-12-01) Polatgil, Mesut; Yıldız, EnsarTürkiye has experienced the most destructive earthquake disaster in recent years. On February 6, 2023, two earthquakes of more than seven magnitudes occurred in Türkiye, first in Pazarcık and then in Elbistan districts of Kahramanmaraş province. These earthquakes caused the deaths of more than 50 thousand people and billions of dollars in damage. The earthquakes had serious effects on every segment of society, including children. This study, which aimed to examine the opinions of individuals about children in such a big earthquake, examined 3.450 tweets sent in February 2023. While the researchers used Maxqda to analyze tweets regarding hashtags, likes, retweets, and source devices, they used Python for sentiment analysis. The findings highlighted that the words AFAD (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency), education, and psychology were frequently used as hashtags in tweets about children. In addition, the study observed that tweets with very few likes and retweets did not arouse much interest in people. The findings of the sentiment analysis indicated that the tweets were quite negatively oriented. The study’s findings can guide future actions and plans concerning the earthquake and children.Publication Emotions on social media: A sentiment analysis approach based on twitter (x) data on the Russian–Ukraine war(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2023-12-25) Eğinli, Ayşen Temel; Taş, Neslihan ÖzmelekTwitter (X) is an important tool that reflects the feelings and attitudes of the public. For this reason, in this study, especially when it comes to events that concern society, Twitter provides an opportunity to both follow the agenda and understand the reactions through instant sharing. Twitter is a social media platform that allows the public to convey their feelings, thoughts, and attitudes to the masses. Twitter provides the opportunity to stay up–to–date and understand reactions through instant posts, especially for social events. In this research, Twitter posts made with the Ukraine hashtag between March 1 and April 30, 2022, during the Russia–Ukraine War, were eliminated with the ‟war” filter, and the expressions were analyzed using the sentiment analysis method. Various URLs were eliminated, and research was carried out on ten thousand tweets. The tweets obtained were categorized as positive, negative, and neutral. Accordingly, the expressions containing positive, negative, and neutral emotions were analyzed by determining the emotional inferences of the words in the tweets with an artificial intelligence algorithm and then detailed by the researchers with content analysis. In this sense, this study becomes important in understanding how the masses express their reactions through emotional social media platforms and what their emotions are in this process. Therefore, this research can be a clue for the consequences of international war on the massesPublication An investigation of the factors influencing external debt in emerging market economies(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2023-12-30) İlhan, AliExternal financing support plays a vital role in the economic development of emerging market economies (EMEs). However, the ineffective using of external resources can increase the debt burden and exacerbate macroeconomic instability and financial vulnerabilities. After the global financial crisis, growing debt accumulation with the debt-favored environment has raised discussions about whether external financing is a blessing or a curse for macro-financial stability. This paper explores the drivers of external debt in EMEs from 2005Q1 to 2020Q1. To this end, the effects of economic growth, inflation, exchange rate, trade openness, and domestic credit on external debt to gross domestic product are analyzed with panel cointegration and panel augmented mean group (AMG) estimator for eight EMEs. The panel cointegration findings show that a long-run relationship exists between the series. The panel AMG findings indicate that economic growth declines external debt. A rise in trade openness, inflation, and domestic credit accumulate foreign debt in the long-run, whereas the impact of the credit is barely statistically significant. Although the impact of the exchange rate is insignificant for the panel, it is statistically significant in the four countries. Country-specific results are largely consistent with the panel findings, but some differences exist across countries.Publication The Limits of the EU’s Power in the context of sanctions Imposed to Türkiye in the Eastern Mediterranean.(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2023-12-30) Yücel, A.Since the beginning of the 2010s, Türkiye has been subjected to efforts of exclusion from the deepening energy collaborations in the Eastern Mediterranean. In 2020, Turkish Parliament approved a bill authorizing the deployment of troops to support Libya in countering various threats to its stability and integrity. These threats included terrorist organizations, irregular migration that had an impact on the entire region, illegal armed groups, and human trafficking. Additionally, Türkiye took steps to disrupt the anti-Türkiye axis in the region by signing a maritime delimitation agreement with Libya to establish clear boundaries for maritime jurisdictional areas. With this move, Türkiye positioned itself as a game changer in the Eastern Mediterranean. Greece and the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC), who are uncomfortable with Türkiye’s steps in line with its rightful interests, have made concerted efforts to involve the EU in the issues related to the Eastern Mediterranean region, acting in favor of their own unilateral interests. The EU, eventually, has decided to impose sanctions on Türkiye, particularly as a result of discussions in the European Parliament. The biased and unfair attitude of the EU, coupled with its implementation of sanctions, will have significant political costs on Türkiye-EU relations. In this context, an evaluation is being made regarding the effectiveness of the EU’s stance and applied sanctions, considering the EU’s perspective and its claim to be an actor in the region within the context of the current balance of powerPublication Peculiarities of interviewing elites in post-conflict societies(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2023-02-16) Beysoylu, CemaliyeThose who engage in a task of conducting elite interviews in post-conflict societies must prepare for the contextspecific challenges of this environment to mitigate the potentially distorting consequences of the process and the substance. This paper discusses the issues and challenges associated with interviewing elites in post-conflict societies. Examples are drawn from the author’s own experiences gained through conducting over seventy interviews while collecting data on peace processes in Cyprus and Kosovo. Particularly, the issues of sampling, gaining access, and the process of interviewing are discussed with a focus on the issues of the impact of terminology, the use of recording devices, the researcher’s positionality, and the subjective qualities of data.Publication The tourism-based environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis: Evidence from the Turkish Economy(Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi, 2023-11-22) Şeker, Hilal; Avşar, MelahatThis study aimed to determine the impact of tourism on environmental pollution and test the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis for the Turkish economy based on data from 1975–2018 in cubic form by observing the impacts of tourism indicators on the environment. We analyzed the correlations among per-capita ecological footprint, international tourist arrivals, per capita GDP, the social globalization index, and urbanization rate using the ARDL limit test. Based on our research, we have found evidence that during the study period, there is an N-shaped correlation between tourist arrivals and ecological footprint in the Turkish economy. This contradicts the idea of an inverted U-shaped Kuznets curve for both the short- and long-term. Our findings reveal that domestic and national policies to fight against pollution need to be developed rather than wasting time by waiting for the end of the relationship between tourist arrivals and environmental pollution after a certain milestone.
