    Computer-aided-design of workholding devices

    This paper describes a CAD system used for workholder design. The interactive system can be used to generate the best location system for a workholder and also assist with the positioning of supports and clamps in order to minimise the influence of the machining forces.

    In this study performance characteristics of journal bearings are investigated, including the shaft deformation. To determine the pressure distribution and oil film thickness Reynolds' differential equation is solved with Reynolds type of boundary conditions while constitutive equations, usable for linear elastic materials, are utilized to determine the deformations. When shaft deformation is considered together with linear deformotion, bearing performance is observed to be in negligibly important. Therefore it can be concluded that elasticities of bearing materials must be taken into account during design.
