Abstract
Harezm'in önemli şehirlerinden Harezm'in kalbi olarak bilinen Gürgenç şehri, dünya ve İslâm tarihi açısından önemli kültür merkezlerinden biridir. Gürgenç özellikle 10. yüzyılda ticarî, ilmî yönden gelişme göstererek, sadece bölgenin değil, bütün İslâm âleminin en güzide merkezi hâline gelmiştir. Her yönüyle Türk ve İslâm şehri olan Gürgenç, Harezmşahlar Devleti'ne başkentlik yaptığı zamanda en parlak dönemini yaşamıştır. Moğol saldırıları ve işgalinden önce Gürgenç Orta Asya’da ilim, medeniyet ve kültür başkenti idi. Bu dönemde şehir harika mimarî yapıları, sanat abideleri ile göz kamaştırıyordu. Çalışmanın amacı; Gürgenç şehrinin önemini tarihi kaynaklar ışığında ele alarak Moğol istilasındaki durumunu incelemektir. Bu bağlamda Türk ve İslâm dünyasında hakkında çok az şey bilinen bu şehrin ismi, kısa siyasî tarihi anahatlarıyla Moğol istilası ve Moğolların şehirde yaptıkları derin tahribatlar hakkında bilgi verilecektir. Çalışma, Gürgenç'in özellikle 13. yüzyılda bölgedeki ve İslâm tarihindeki yerini, şehrin ilim ehli ve savaşçı halkının tarihini de aydınlatmayı hedeflemektedir.
One of the important cities of Khwarezm, the city of Gurganj, known as the heart of Khwarezm, is one of the important cultural centers in terms of world and Islamic history. Gurganj developed commercially and scientifically, especially in the 10th century, and become the most popular center not only in the region, but throughout the Islamic world. Gurganj, which was a Turkish and Islamic city in all aspects, experienced its heyday period when it became the capital of the Khwarazmshahs state. Before the Mongols attacks and invasion, Gurganj was the capital of science, civilization and culture in the Cenral Asia. During this period the city was dazzling with its tremendous architectural structures and monuments. Purpose of the study; the importance of the city of Gurganj in the light of historical sources and to study its position in the Mongol invasion. In this context, about the name of this city, which is little known in the Turkish and Islamic world, its brief political history, about the invasion of the Mongols and the deep destruction of the Mongols in the city will be discussed. The study is to illuminate the place of Gurganj in the region and in the history of Islam, especially the status of the city in the 13th century, as well as it also seeks to illuminate the history of the people of the city of knowledge and warriors.

Bu çalışma, Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsünde Mehmet Ali Kapar 'iın danışmanlığında Abdylla Orazsahedov tarafından yazılan "Tarihte Gürgenç şehri (Kuruluşundan hanlıklar dönemine kadar)" adlı doktora tezine dayanılarak hazırlanmıştır.
