Compliment responses in English and Turkish with implications for language learning

| dc.description.abstract | The present study was conducted to investigate compliment response strategies used by Turkish EFL learners, gender differences in the strategies and the comparison between Turkish and English compliment responses. Also, the linguistic realization of the strategies was investigated. The subjects were 67 students in a private high school in Bursa.( 35 female and 32 male students) Date were collected by the use of DCT. The data revealed that compliment response strategies in Turkish how similarities with English compliment response strategies. The findings suggest that both Turkish and English speakers tend to accept or agree while responding to a compliment. The rejection and downgrading strategies were less frequently used in the two languages. It was found that in responding to compliments two languages were very close and cross- cultural communication can become unproblematic. The study has implication for language pedagogy and textbook writing. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | Yapılan araştırmanın amacı Yabancı dil öğrenen Türk öğre ncilerinin iltifat yanıtlarında kullandıkları stratejileri araştırarak strateji kullanımında cinsiyet farkının etkisini incelemek ve İngilizce'de kullanılan stratejilerle karşılaştirmasını yapmaktır. Ayrıca stratejilerin Türkçe'de nasıl ifade edildiği de araştırmanın diğer bir bölümünü oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada kullanılan öğrenciler Bursa' da Özel Melike Pınar Lisesi 1. ve 2. sıfında öğrenim görmekteydiler. Toplam 67 öğrenci bu çalışmaya katıldı (35 kız 32 erkek). Araştırmada veri toplamak için DCT kullanıldı. Araştırma sonunda Türkçe'deki ve İngilizce'deki iltifat yanıtlarında kullanılan stratejilerin benzerlikler gösterdiğini belirtmiştir. Bulgular Türkçe ve İngilizce konuşan kişilerin bir iltifata yanıt verirken kabul etme ve hemfikir olma eğiliminde olduğunu buna karşın reddetme ve iltifatın etkisini azaltma stratejilerinin her iki dilde de daha seyrek kullanılan stratejiler olduğunu ileri sürmektedir.Her iki dilde de kullanılan iltifat yanıtlarının birbirine çok yalan olduğu, bu sayede bu dilleri konuşan kişiler arasında iletişiminin sorunsuz olabileceği sonucuna varılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda elde edilen bulguların dil eğitiminde ve ders kitapları yazımında etkisi tartışılmıştır. | tr_TR |
