Abstract

Dostoevsky, regarded as one of the world's greatest writers, wrote novels in which discussion of the existence of God holds an important place. Besides his ideas about problems of philosophy of religion such as freedom, evil and morality; he also brings up the choice between faith and unbelief and its results on the base of Russian society. According to him the most important thing in life that direct human actions is God. For Dostoevsky who embraces Orthodox Christianity, Christ is the only leading figure for humanity and salvation of the world depends on the preservation of the simple faith of the Russian people. While he emphasizes the faith, on the other side he studies reasons and results of the unbelief. For Dostoevsky it's clearly hard to reach absolute belief even if people choose to believe with their free will. In this point, there is an only fact that helps people is cosmic love and thanks to this active love, people can love each other and God unconditionally. Although people live tides between faith and unbelief because of their dualist nature, in fact it's the same thing that lead them to salvation by struggling and suffering.
