Abstract

Crevices in the combustion chamber which are filled with unburned fuel-air mixture but flame can not propagate constitute main sources of the hydrocarbon emissions. The most important sources are ring crevices and head gasket crevice. This paper consist of the results of a theoretical study devoted to diffusion and removal of these two sources. The model composed of three submodels. First, thermodynamic model for combustion chamber gases, second, model for hydrocarbons of ring crevices and head gasket crevice and the last is the model for numerical solution of the flow field including turbulence model. Centrally oriented single valve is considered to simplify the numerical model. 2-D flow field has been solved for finite volume solution procedure. Due to their position nearer to exhaust valve, head gasket HC’s exit the cylinder earlier. They reach exhaust port at 510°-570° KMA while for ring crevice this extends to almost 660° KMA. It should also be noted that head gasket HC’s directs to central region of the cylinder, dissimilar to ring crevice HC’s as they creeps over the wall at least for a considerable period.
