Acta Cardiologica, 69(4), 399-405.0001-5385https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/AC.69.4.3036656https://hdl.handle.net/11452/39966Objective Inflammation and dystrophic calcification have been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic heart failure (CHF). The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential usefulness of fetuin-A as a biomarker in CHF. Methods Serum fetuin-A was measured in 66 CHF patients with left ventricular function < 50% and in 31 healthy controls at baseline. Fetuin-A was evaluated as a diagnostic marker for systolic heart failure and compared with C-reactive protein (CRP) and pro-brain natriuretic peptide (pro-BNP). Results The levels of serum fetuin-A were significantly decreased in the CHF patients compared to the control group (P < 0.01). Although there were significant correlations between fetuin-A and certain parameters in patients and controls, none of these were present consistently in either group. It was found that serum fetuin-A levels could identify patients with systolic heart failure with a high degree of sensitivity and specificity. Conclusions Serum fetuin-A is decreased in CHF patients, indicating that anti-inflammatory activity is downregulated in CHF and that calcification may be associated with CHF.eninfo:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccessChronic heart failureInflammationFetuin-AAlpha(2)-heremans-schmid glycoprotein/fetuin-aDiastolic dysfunctionMechanismsInsulin-resistanceAccumulationHs-glycoproteinExpressionCalcificationAssociationCardiovascular system & cardiologyAgedAlpha-2-hs-glycoproteinBiological markersC-reactive proteinCase-control studiesFemaleHeart failure, systolicHumansMaleMiddle agedNatriuretic peptide, brainPeptide fragmentsPredictive value of testsSensitivity and specificitySeverity of illness indexVentricular dysfunction, leftSerum fetuin-A levels in patients with systolic heart failureArticle0003466814000072-s2.0-8490608900839940569425181915https://doi.org/10.2143/AC.69.4.3036656Cardiac & cardiovascular systemsFetuin A; Glycoprotein; Human AHSG ProteinAdultAgedAntiinflammatory activityArticleBlood examinationBlood pressureCardiomyopathyCardiovascular parametersCongestive heart failureControlled studyCreatinine blood levelDiagnostic test accuracy studyDisease markerDisease severityEchocardiographyEnd diastolic diameterEnd systolic diameterEnzyme linked immunosorbent assayFemaleGlomerulus filtration rateHeart left ventricle ejection fractionHeart left ventricle functionHumanIschemic heart diseaseKidney diseaseMajor clinical studyMaleNew york heart association classReceiver operating characteristicSensitivity and specificitySystolic heart failureThorax radiographyAcetylsalicylic acidAngiotensin 2 receptor antagonistBrain natriuretic peptideC reactive proteinCalcium channel blocking agentDigitoxinDipeptidyl carboxypeptidase inhibitorFetuin aFurosemideHemoglobinHigh density lipoproteinHydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme a reductase inhibitorLow density lipoproteinNitric acid derivativeSpironolactoneTriacylglycerol1784-973X
