Current Neuropharmacology, 18(3), 216-228.1570-159X1875-6190https://doi.org/10.2174/1570159X17666191021111809http://www.eurekaselect.com/article/101699http://hdl.handle.net/11452/29959Background: Natural phenolic compounds in medicinal herbs and dietary plants are antioxidants which play therapeutic or preventive roles in different pathological situations, such as oxidative stress and inflammation. One of the most studied phenolic compounds in the last decade is chlorogenic acid (CGA), which is a potent antioxidant found in certain foods and drinks. Objective: This review focuses on the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive bioactivities of CGA, and the putative mechanisms of action are described. Ethnopharmacological reports related to these bioactivities are also reviewed. Materials and Methods: An electronic literature search was conducted by authors up to October 2019. Original articles were selected. Results: CGA has been shown to reduce inflammation and modulate inflammatory and neuropathic pain in animal models. Conclusion: The consensus of the literature search was that systemic CGA may facilitate pain management via bolstering antioxidant defenses against inflammatory insults.eninfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessChlorogenicAcidInflammationPainInflammatoryNeuropathicAntihyperalgesicAntiallodynicNF-Kappa BGated potassium channelsGaba receptor agonistsNitric-oxide synthaseIncuded liver-injuryOxygen species rosHypericum-perforatumCaffeic acidNeuropathic painIn-vitroNeurosciences & neurologyPharmacology & pharmacyAnalgesicsAnimalsAnti-inflammatory agentsChlorogenic acidChronic painDisease modelsAnimalEncephalitisHumansPlant extractsSepsisPharmacologic overview of chlorogenic acid and its metabolites in chronic pain and inflammationArticle0005146510000042-s2.0-8507943581221622818331631820NeurosciencesPharmacology & pharmacyAntioxidant; Carlina Oxide; LoniceraAntioxidantBidens pilosa extractCaffeic acidCheilanthes farinose extractChlorogenic acidChlorogenic acid derivativeCnidium officinale extractDrug metaboliteErycibe obtusifolia extractFerulic acidHypericum perforatum extractIon channelMansoa alliacea extractPlant extractPorana sinensis extractRosae multiflorae extractUnclassified drugUrtica circularis extractAnalgesic agentAntiinflammatory agentChlorogenic acidPlant extractAntiinflammatory activityAntinociceptionArthritisChronic painConsensusDegenerative diseaseDisease modelDrug mechanismEthnopharmacologyHumanIn vivo studyInflammationInflammatory painNeuropathic painNonhumanPainReviewRheumatoid arthritisAnimalChronic painComplicationEncephalitisMetabolismSepsis
