Bu eseri ve eserde uygulanan metodolojiyi anlamak, Batı’nın Hz. Muhammed tasavvurunu kavramak için önem arz etmektedir. Çalışmamızda Muir’in The Life of İslam adlı eseriyle birlikte tarihi tenkit metodunu da açıklamaya çalıştık. Bunun yanında bu metoda dair farklı yaklaşımları da belirtmeye çalıştık. Sonuç olarak ise William Muir’in her ne kadar eserini Arapça kaynaklara dayandırmak suretiyle objektif olduğunu iddia etse de, klasik orta çağ oryantalist yaklaşımından ayrılmadığını fark ettik.The studies written in the 19th century in the West have come forward with the claim to change the approaches to Prophet Muhammad presented in the orientalist literature and to write the truth about him by obtaining and relying on the original Arabic sources and by applying the method of historical criticism to them. The work of Sir William Muir is the first work written in English with the utilization of such Arabic sources. Understanding this work and its methodology is important for understanding the Western conception of Prophet Muhammad. In this study, we tried to elucidate Muir’s work The Life of Mahomet together with the method of historical criticism as well. Besides this, we tried to explain different approaches to this method.
