Afrika'da Protestan misyonerliği: Etiyopya örneği

Abstract

Afrika kıtasındaki Protestan misyonerler uzun yıllar süren faaliyetleri sonucunda bir çok müntesip kazanmış ve sayılarını oldukça artırmıştır. Bu açıdan Etiyopya eşsiz bir örnek olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Çünkü IV. yüzyılda Hıristiyanlığı benimseyen ve Ortodoks bir geleneğe sahip olan Etiyopya, dış dünya ile bağlantısını kopararak ve zamanla kendisine has bir kimlik ve kültür kurarak dışardan gelen her türlü fikir ve akımları reddetmiştir. Bu kapalı yapıdan olumsuz manada etkilenen kesimlerden biri de hiç şüphesiz Batılı misyonerler olmuştur. Fakat onlar azimli ve istikrarlı faaliyetleri sonunda Protestanlığı, nihayetinde Etiyopya'da etkin bir konuma getirebilmişlerdir. Bu tezde, Protestan misyonerlerin nasıl ve hangi aşamalar sonunda başarılı oldukları sosyal ve tarihsel açıdan ele alınıp incelenmektedir.Protestan Missions in the continent of Africa have gained a lot of members and increased their numbers in consequence of their activities extended for centuries. In this respect, Ethiopia is a unique case for researchers. Because Ethiopia adopting Christianity in the IV. century and having the Orthodox tradition had rejected any kind of thoughts by breaking off its relation with external world and constituting an idiosyncratic identity and culture. Western missionaries undoubtedly had suffered a lot from this situation. However, they eventually could take Protestantism into an efficient position due to determined and consistent activities. In this thesis, how and why Protestant missionaries succeed has been examined in detail in terms of social and historical perspective.
