Abstract

This study has been carried out between November 1995 and February 1998 detect the prevalence of mange infestation among some pet animals in the vicinity of Kocaeli and to identify the causative parasite species. During the examination, the routine mange diagnostic techniques were used, without the suspicion of mange infestation. For this purpose, dog and cat samples were scratched from mouth, eye, ear, abdominal regions, legs and between fingers. Cerumen samples were also collected by commercial ears swaps. Scratch samples were taken from beak base, legs, cloaka and below wing regions of parakeets and parrots. Collected materials were examined after being treated with 10% KOH. Twelve of 200 examined dogs (6.0%), 8 of 70 parakeets (11.5%) and 1 of 25 parrots (4.0%) were found to be infested. No infestation was detected among the 150 cats examined. Dog infestations were caused by Sarcoptes scabiei (66.7%) and by Demodex canis (33.3%). As for the parrots and parakeets, the causative agent was Knemidocoptes pilae. The infestation rate among dogs kept inside (2.7%) was found to be quite lower than that of the dogs kept outside (10.3%) (P<0.01). Although 52.2% of dogs and all parrots and parakeets having skin lesions were found to be infested by mange, no infestation could be detected in cats having skin lesions.
