Abstract

In this study, the effect of irrigation water salinity on the germination parameters of selected bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars and the effect of silicon on alleviating negative effects of irrigation water salinity were investigated. Towards that end, in the first step of the experimental set-up, during germination six different wheat genotypes (Kıraç-66, Kate A-1, Pehlivan, Cumhuriyet-75, Pamukova-97 and Sönmez-2001) were irrigated with two different irrigation waters that had different salt contents (CaCI+MgSO4+NaCI and only NaCI) at five different salinity levels (control, 4, 8, 12, 16 dS/m). In the following step, the wheat genotypes were germinated at five different silicon doses (0, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000 ppm) with three different salinity levels (8, 12, 16 dS/m) of two salt contents indicated above. With the randomized plot design executing with 3 factors and 4 replications, the experiments were carried out in controlled conditions. In the study, germination rate, germination strength, germination index, average germination time, salt tolerance index, root fresh-dry weights, plumula fresh-dry weights, root-plumula lengths, root/plumula ratio, 12. and 24. hour water intake rates were measured and reckoned. On the basis of the results obtained, all parameters examined in this study negatively corralated with increasing salt level of irrigation water. Of all wheat varieties tested in this study, Pehlivan wheat variety was the least affected by the salinity of irrigation water. The silicon treatment in the irrigation water with only NaCl salt had negative effects for all parameters, except the 12-24 hour water intake rates. On the contrary, improvements in some parameters were observed in the treatment of CaCI+MgSO4+NaCl at some silicon doses used in this study. The results demonstrated that the silicon traetment in irrigation water during the germination period of the wheat varieties alleviates the negative effects arising from irrigation water salinity. However, the curative effect of silicon treatment depends on the NaCl level in the irrigation water.
