Abstract

The rapid industrialisation and increase in world population lead to continuous increase in the need for energy. The increase in the need for energy and the continuous reduction in the conventional energy resources make it compulsory to investigate and disclose the renewable energy resources. The wheat straw and sunflower stalk production of Turkey is 18,297 tons based on 1997 data depending on yield/stalk ratios, considering 60% picking probability. A thermal energy of 2.306x10(14) kj/year may be obtained in case that the above quantity is converted to energy by directly burning in a boiler with a combustion productivity of 65%. This figure is equivalent to 8% of total combustion energy of Turkey in 1997. Therefore, one can say that this quantity cannot be underestimated when the energy requirement of our country is taken into consideration. In this study, the results of burning trial obtained through the combustion of wheat straws and sunflower stalks in a straw burner and the chimney gas emission value were determined.
