Abstract

Logistics industry may be defined as the most important means for competition power. As a result of globalization, today, manufacturers compete with not only the domestic firms, but also the ones abroad. Economic developments and the changing structure of competition made it harder to compete for the firms and countries. Having competition power, today, requires transporting the products, which was produced with the best cost and quality, to the final consumer. This requirement can be provided by logistics services. The Diamond Model, which was developed by Michael E. Porter, is one of the most accepted approaches to define the competition power of the sectors. According to this approach, the most significant competition advantage of Turkish Logistics Sector resources from its geographical position. However, it is necessary to develop the substructure, labour, capital and knowledge resources to sustain the competition power. Besides, it is important to empower the domestic demand structure and to regulate market entry obstacles.Logistics industry creates crucial impacts on the national economy thanks to its employment, national income and directing foreign investments. The main reason why the sector has a big volume and been considered important is to serve all sectors. Today, industry, agriculture and service sectors and the productivity of the firms in these sectors is up to the success of the logistics industry. Turkey which has a significant potential in logistics industry with its strategic position took the 34th grade out of 150 countries in 2007 and 39th in 2010 in the Logistics Performance Index by World Bank.
